About to purchase a 84 King cab 720, want opinions

So I'm looking for a truck to get me back and forth from work. I started looking through some classifieds in a city a few hours away.

 

I came across a good looking truck (at least to me)! Wanted to get your guys' opinion.

 

Truck has around 165k miles on it. A good friend of mine stopped by and took it for a test drive after I contacted the owner, said everything felt good. Sounds good & engine ran smooth for the 15 minute drive he took it on.

 

Small damage on the tail gate and a small rust spot in the bed.

 

Ad was asking $1925, got him to come down to $1700. Is that too much still?

More pics would help, but that interior sure seems clean. Even still has the stock radio in it. Judging by what you've said, $1700 seems fair. However, better info from you means better advice from us.

Is the owner the original owner? Does it use any oil? Does the engine, trans, or rear end show any signs of leakage? How tight is the steering?

 

If the truck checks out and is solid all the way around, I think $1700 is a fair price. I paid $1900 for my first 4x4 720 and it was in very similar condition to the one you're looking at, very straight, it burned a little oil (less than a quart between changes) but didn't leak a drop and it ran like a top, only had 123,000 miles on it. I felt that I overpaid a little, but I drove it for two years without issue and sold it for $1500. My current truck I paid $800 for and its about half as nice as the one you're looking at, maybe worse :)

No signs of leakage, had my buddy look underneath and all around. No oilspots on the place its been parked for 2 months. Not sure about how much oil it burns. The current owner is i think the 3rd maybe 4th. He just did an oil change on it.

 

 

not bad price

1000$ would be better but its pretty straight.

Im just not into working on Z22/24 motors. More stuff to go bad ,at least to me. carb ect lots of emissions stuff

 

This is going to be my DD and I dont plan on modding, so emissions dont worry me. Plus we dont have to pass smog.

 

If something does go haywire, I have this forum I can turn to for help!! :thumbup:

UPDATE!

 

So I got my 720 home yesterday afternoon after about 4 hours on the highway. She did great, had some passes to climb and didnt really miss a beat.

 

We made a stop about 3/4 of the trip was done, when I came off the highway, she was idling high. Not sure if thats due to it just being really warm, maybe you guys can give me some insight on that.

 

Trucks in pretty good condition inside, needs a deep cleaning on the seats, handles, doors &  steering wheel. (its all got the work grime stickyness)

 

I will post some more pictures tonight.

Theres many many reasons it could be idleing high.

 

Check the throttle return stop on your carb, it may need to be adjusted back or "down".

 

Check for any vacuum leaks on every hose in the engine bay, and leaks around the carbs base.

 

Check and if necessary adjust your idle mixture screw or "air fuel mixture screw".

 

If it has a weber carburetor, check to see if the throttle linkage is returning all the way. Webers tend to stick and not return completely, causing high idle. Mine was idling at like 3500rpm sometimes until i put a helper return spring on.

Will do some checking around. No weber, at least for now. I was thinking about putting one on in the future.

The '84 mixture screw is sealed by the maker and not easily adjustable by the owner. Unlikely the mixture will change so it's something else.

 

I've yet to see the idle go up from a vacuum leak. This would indicate the misture is too lean and more air needed... again unlikely.

 

Fast idle can be from...

 

Choke heater has stopped working and choke is part on (or not fully off) the choke al;so has a fast idle linkage so when it's on the idle is also higher. When warmed up take the top off the air filter and see if the choke plate is fully open or part closed.

and

 

The fast idle cam or linkage is dirty or simply stuck. Spray the linkages at the rear of the carb with WD-40, hold throttle part open and work everything to loosen it up.

 

Throttle cable is too tight. If kicking the throttle lightly dislodges the fast idle this is likely the cause.

 

Foreign object caught in the primary or secondary throttle plate.

 

BCDD improperly set too sensitive and not returning to proper idle after decelerating.

Thanks for the input sir, you are the man. I am yet to come across some time to be able to do all the checks, but shes been running good the past two days.

 

 

Does it have cruise? My cruise control cable always caught and have me a high idle.

 

No cruise, which made my leg go numb on the drive home the other day!

Hi guys,

 

Its been a while! Hope its okay to revive an old thread.

 

Getting ready to do some work on the truck - spark plugs, fuel system & oil change.

 

Anything else I should be looking at doing?

 

Also, the last couple of days its started to sputter/stumble when I come to a stop and idle, it may be idling too low, maybe change the idle set screw so it runs a little higher? (The high idle I had back in august ended up working itself out, something must have came "unstuck")

 

Edit: Something I forgot to mention before, previous owner had a extended range tank installed at some point, then removed which may have lead to it currently using one of those Mr. Gasket fuel pumps and a non stock in line fuel filter installed, should I change this back to a stock pumps?

On your 720 you will have to look for the pcv between the runners of the intake manifold, between the manifold and the head. An ugly 90° rubber bend connects to it.

 

Got a chance to work on it this weekend with a couple (much more mechanically inclined) friends.

 

We neede to replace the fuel pump, because on Friday night it started leaking badly. It was a little Mr. Gasket pump, no one had the stock one, so we just went with what had already been in use.

 

Next up we looked at the carb after checking ingnition.

 

From the sounds of it, & what they have told me, I most likely have a dirty port for the idle circuit on the carb, after they listened to it & trying playing with the idle and throttle set screws & we were not able to clean up the idle.

 

Im going to look into either Reman'd or a new weber (any suggestions on where to go to purchase), as well as getting anything else cleaned up throughout the week.
