Is this head shaved too much or useable?

Make sure the top of the head is flat also.  If the head was milled on the bottom to make it flat, and the top was not milled, the top is still not flat.  This put the cam tower holes out of line, and in extreme cases can even cause a camshaft to break.  The cam shaft should easily turn by hand, without the rocker arms on the valves.

Looks shaved judging from the shortness of the numbers. You can check that the cam spins by hand without the rockers on it... a good idea that will save you later if it is warped and tight. Best thing now is to cc the combustion chambers. They should be 41cc for an unshaved closed chamber head like the 219. I'm sure it will be less.

I was going to ask the head height spec to the 0.001", but I did my own search and came up with these links:

I had a closed chamber head that was shaved a lot, maybe even cut into the lower part of the casting numbers. I sold it to HRH for a performance engine he built for his body guy Reg. As far as I know it hasn't run yet, but I trust Matt did his homework and got a high compression but still useable combination. What I don't know is what pistons Matt is running with that shaved head. I think with a closed chamber head you can get away with higher CR.

datzenmike - Totally OT, but  after Canby when you were driving from Sprague to Harrington, Reg says he saw a 710 wagon with primer spots. I think he passed you but I don't know what he was driving. He was on his way to the farm where about a half-dozen assorted Datsuns reside. I'm surprised when you got to that road your goon didn't try to turn off to go visit all it's kin.

Len I did wander off onto a dirt road to the right. The road I wanted made a left and I just kept going. Went about 5 miles north and east before giving up and going back to find the missed turn. This turn kept me on pavement more northerly to your place. Sound like the place???

That sounds like the place not too far north of Sprague where the main highway makes a sweeping 90 degree to the left, but there is a secondary road that goes straight. The locals know to go left and anybody that hasn't been on the highway before will figure it out or end up somewhere else. You did good to make it through Harrington. Two state highways and two county highways come into town. WA State won't acknowledge in their signage that the county highways exist, even though half the people coming through town want to use the county highways as shortcuts. City of Harrington has put up a couple of small "Ritzville" signs to help find the county road that direction. But if the signs fall off the post it might take a couple of years to get them back up, since everyone here in town already knows which way to Ritzville.

You know my biggest beef with Wa state isn't the condition of the roads... it's the signage. You come into a town and the road comes to a T and do ya think they put the road number and an arrow??? Nope. There's a bend and the only thing that lets you know is that about a mile later you haven't seen a road number sign so you go back and make the turn and a half mile farther Ahhh there's a sign. Shake my head.
