Datsun 710 / 140j 1973 overlapping parts?

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I'm curious to what parts that fit over to a datsun 710 / 140j violet from other models from the current time, or if there is links to other topics that have already been made?

Not sure if this type was sold in the states, but my car got the 1,4l L14 engine, and leafsprings in the rear. Im also curious to if I want to give a little drop what would be a nice place to start, either new or overlapping?

I wouldn't mind links to either other topics or maybe places to get parts. Although might be a little difficult if they only ship to the states since I live in Europe, Norway.

Any help for any sort is welcome for me since I have had the car for only around 2 weeks now.

My datsun :) Color code is 123, chertrause green for those who wonder. It looks slightly better after these images that I posted in the unite topic.

Well we got the same L series engine in a larger L18 and L20B displacement which means you got the same 4 speed and likely the same automatic. As the 3N71B automatic is exactly the same length as the 71B 5 speeds then an automatic driveshaft will be the right length for swapping a 280z or 280zx (non turbo) 5 speed into your 710. You only need modify the trans. cross member for the swap. This is what I did.

If you find a zx car '79-'83 the front struts are shorter than the 710s and best of all have huge brake calipers and large vented rotors. Remove the top hat and spring and trim the lower spring perch off. Put the spring perch, spring and top hat from your 710 on the 280zx strut. Support the lower spring perch by clamping on split collars and you have adjustable ride height for about $30. If the zx struts still have the original oil filled dampers you can replace the thin hydraulic oil with thicker 20W motorcycle fork oil to increase the firmness. Last you can trim the 710 spring to increase the spring rate to match the firmer dampers.

The EI (electronic ignition) distributor usually referred to as a 'matchbox' was available here after '79. It gets rid of the problematic and labor intensive points and has a higher output spark. You need the matching coil to go with it. Don't know what was available in Europe.  Maybe later 910s with SSS engines had them?

Here all Datsuns after '77 had internally regulated alternators. It's easy enough to convert an external regulated 710 to internal.  This gets rid of the external regulator box.

Regarding the transmission, mine is a 4 speed manual, I dont think they sold a lot of automatics over here. Most cars that are old are mainly manual, although there are a few automatics I believe.

And regarding what you said of using zx struts, it might not be so easy over here due to we need paper in order that its proper and need to do wheel alightment, light and such to then have it in the registration paper in the car, and if its modded with a lowering and you get stopped with such add ins, you will get a fine, need to replace it back to stock and take a trip to the local enforcers or something that have to do with car safety, we call it state Road Administration, its a pain regarding this. Is there any other way to modify it like were it can have a paper on being lowered which is approved and such? Unless its a bit hard over in the states to know this? Or do you know of any shocks that can replace the old ones along with springs for a lower ride height?

As for the leafsprings in the back, how do I lower that area if you know or what parts are needed?

Sorry if this will make it slightly harder to help, but thanks none the less :)

And thanks Tolkmod, and the model series is called 710, just the names varies deepending on the region it gets sold.

Regarding the zx struts, is it from a 280zx? And is it possible to just change the shocks from one of those instead of having to replace the whole part for brakes? Although better brakes would be nice, but not sure how much of a use it would be on a 85 hp engine haha.

Yes a zx. The problem with them is the spring is too large to fit up into the 710's strut tower so they have to go and smaller or 710 springs used. To do this you have to cut the zx spring perch off and put the smaller 710 ones on. Once the ride height is decided on you can easily weld them back onto the zx struts and no one would be the wiser when painted over.

This adds absolutely no value to this discussion, but on my phone that lowering block DM posted looks like the head of a sledgehammer jammed in there. I know it's not, but it made me giggle.

Haseo, what do they look for when inspecting a lowered vehicle? The more detail you give us, the better we can help you find a way to get it done. One of the best things about the 280zx parts is they are still "stock" parts. Only a big datsun lover would be able to tell the swap had been done, based on spring diameter and brake size. It will look like ugly vintage datsun parts under there to anyone else.

Well, I honestly don't know wthat they check for, mostly for correct papers, which we call TÜV approval or something, and check with the according parts that its correctly, not to low and such.

Although if its stock parts, its possibly harder to see. And springs for the zx that turn narrower at the top, know were I can check for this?

Is it necessarly to get the brake part of it as well when doing the swap for 280zx struts?

And what else would be good to look over the L14 engine and transmission? Mine is a manual as I pointed out earlier. And another curious note, is it a timing chain or belt for the camshaft?
