mahi2010bv
Hey guys, its been a while since I have been on here. I bought a 81 datsun 210 hatchback about a year ago here in Puerto Rico where I was going to school, now she wasn't in the best of shape and over the last year I have been slowly trying to rebuild here. I was a college student when I bought since the car was cheap, but over time I realized how reliable and dependent she has been. I had the heads rebuilt, changed the headgasket and all other gaskets on the top part of the block. Water pump, alternator, time belt cover. (most of the work I have done myself, not a mechanic but know how to use a wrench. And datsun1200.com is super informative) What's missing is the tranny, carb, and fixing the differential and the whole drivetrain would have been replaced. The body has rust and the interior is shot, but that's another story. 1) My problem is that recently my automatic transmission has been giving me some problems, its the JATCO 3N71B. When I bought the car it had a little transmission leak, took it to a shop and had every bushing and gasket changed out (problem solved). Now though it seems to be rough on the take off and shifts hard into second. Is it time for a rebuild or is there some way I can save the transmission? The oil level is fine, looked underneath and no leaks, vacuum modulator looks fine, I need some assistance on this one. 2) After replacing the head gasket I noticed the car runs rough. I adjust the carb, changed the spark plugs and wires, rotor, disturber cap and nothing. I think it might be that the carb needs rebuilding but im not sure. I pulled the plugs yesterday and found oil on the threads, is that normal? Any information would be great, thank you Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
For the automatic to run properly the engine has too also. Be sure the engine is properly tuned. Low intake vacuum from poorly set valve lash or dirty jets in the carb will confuse the automatic into thinking you are accelerating harder that you are. Up shifts will be at higher speeds and more abrupt. Quote Link to comment
mahi2010bv
Thanks for the reply, sorry for the late response. Yesterday, I adjusted the valves and also check any leaks from the carb. I did find that the carb gasket seem to have a tear so I was able to replace that, and none of the lines had any holes or tears. I was wondering I would like to change the tranny fluid, the last time it was serviced was a year ago. Like i said before the tranny did have some leaks, so I did basically put about 4 quarts in the transmission just to get around (at the time I knew little about what I was doing). When I took it in to get serviced the tech told me with a car this old I shouldn't change the oil but just filter it due to cars with this many miles the tranny could have more problems down the road. When looking at the oil yesterday it was brown and dirty, not red and bright. What I have read is to leave the fluid alone, can anyone give me any advise on this? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I have heard this also but not from the Nissan FSM factory service manual. That dark color is abrasive clutch material suspended in the oil. I can't see how removing this would cause problems later. Quote Link to comment
mahi2010bv
So.. I changed the oil but the tranny doesn't want to change into second gear. I'm thinking of rebuilding it, is there any place where I can find information on how to perform the rebuild? Quote Link to comment
dat521gatherer
Beware if you try to change out the vacuum modulator the dealer told me a month ago they aren't available anymore. You can get after market ones but the problem with them is that they are adjustable so you have to try to dial it in. Quote Link to comment

Hopefully you didn't add 4 quarts at once. Over filling is worse than running low. Have you over filled it? Did you check the dip stick? Quote Link to comment
