A master can leak fluid but the booster can only leak vacuum. There's little to tell if the booster is 'leaking'. Possibly the engine will stumble at idle when you apply the brakes but very rare for this to happen. If the booster has brake fluid dripping, this is from the master.

To test if the booster is working, pump the brakes several times to exhaust any residual vacuum. Step on the brake and hold. Start engine. Normally the pedal will drop an inch or so almost immediately after starting if it is working.

Your '74 should have a 3/4" master. The 280 master is 7/8" or do you mean the 280zx master which is 15/16" and largest of all? The larger master is, the more effort needed to push the fluid. You will be going up 3/16" in size. As you have a brake booster this shouldn't be a problem. You may notice the pedal a bit firmer.

Did you try this?????

When there is no assist, the pedal will be extra firm and it's quite an effort to stop.

There is a one way valve in line between intake and booster.... if on backwards, no worky.
