dabby dunkerton
Long story short i turn the key hear a weird sound. Start driving around and notice temp gauge shoot up.Upon further inspection my harmonic balancer is hanging by only the fan belt! wtf how does a harmonic balancer even break??? anyways the only one i could find online is 300 at orileys is that my only option as far as replacing it? And even after i shell out the dough is this gonna be a bear of a job or does it bolt in? any advice is much appreciated guys!Ill try posting pics in a sec Quote Link to comment
nismo dr
Relatively bolt in, if the old one fell off as long as the crank snout is still round you should be good to go. I would wager here on ratsun you can find a crank pulley less than $300 though.... this is where datzenmike can chime in with part# so I can see if still available from Nissan , you probably need a crank bolt as well? datzenmike
Can't find damper only. Pulley with damper assy... 12303-N3600 Used on all '75-'78 280z L28 engines exclusively. Also used (optionally) on the '74 L26 and one year only '79 280zx non power steering. So what is common to the L26 and the first year zx??? No power steering for sure, but the L24 didn't have PS either so the question becomes what is different between the L24 and later L26/L28???? All L24/26/28 are listed with damper so pulley diameter, number of belts or spacing on the crank may be the difference. All have the damper so if it's bolted on you could swap one onto your L28. 1 Quote Link to comment

Take a look at the front of the crankshaft. You should see a large 26mm bolt holding the pulley on. Quote Link to comment
darrel
http://hbrepair.com/harmonicbalancer_018.htm If still rebuildable. Quote Link to comment

datrod
This could get ugly. If the pulley came off and the key dropped off into the oil pan you might be in trouble. There should be a half moon piece of key stock on the crank snout. If you can't find that little piece it could be in the bottom of the pan. Might lay there for years. But I don't think I would take a chance. Quote Link to comment
Ranman72
if you dont find the crank key use a large magnet on the pan and slide it around everywhere and toward the drain plug to see if it might be in the pan or gone completely Quote Link to comment
afbrian13
The only difference on those is the number of grooves. Having extra doesn't hurt anything except a slight bit of added weight. Ever find a new pull and bolt? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Key is heavier than oil it won't go anywhere. Might slide to the lowest part of the pan but so what? Lash pads end up there all the time and they are smaller. Can't pass the pick up tube screen. 1 Quote Link to comment
paradime
True that, I found a lash pad in my SR oil pan. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Does the SR even have lash pads??? Quote Link to comment

Ever find a new pull and bolt? yep i finally found a 1 row balancer new on ebay for 80 bucks and then i got the bolt and other supporting hardware from z car source for about 20 if i rember correctly. Honestly putting on was super skethch i took out my raidtor but i still barley see a damn thing eventually i was fairly confident it was straight and just started tightening down with the tool. Lol eventually it slipped on but at first i was sketched out that i didnt have it straight:D all is well now thanks guys as always! Quote Link to comment
