1968/69 510 clock wiring

According to the 68/69 510 wiring schematic the clock has two power sources and one ground.

The back of the clock looks like this (far left):

Now looking at this I would assume the red lead is 12v power. The metal tab is ground. After wiring it this way, I found that is not correct. The red lead is 12v power for the illumination that should be powered only when the lights are on. Power to the red lead does not power the clock mechanism.The metal tab is not ground. The clock is grounded through the housing. When removing the ground from the tab, the clock still illuminated. 

 

It seems a bit weird to have 12v to a metal male spade with exposed metal..

 

If anyone has one of these clocks in there car, could you confirm my theory? I don't want to just go around applying power to components.

power to red from light switched source 

power to the prong with a shield is sufficient 

ground should be through the mounting points 

I have one in my 68 and I think that is how I ran it

This is how I ran it, and it now works.
