The '71 and up 4 speed is the same length as the later non turbo 5 speed so you shouldn't need a different drive shaft.

As long as the R-200 is the same length as the R-180 that's in it then the drive shaft should fit.

Post pictures of them, or the c/l ad...

In this day and age someone that can't find a camera or phone to take a picture? and have it sent or put in an ad?? I don't see why YOU should have to do all the heavy lifting to sell HIS parts.

It is worthwhile to go here: http://dimequarterly.blogspot.com/p/back-issues-ordering.htmlthen to Vol. 11, Issue 4 for a great tranny ID article. Then if you have time, go to the Drivetrain section here on Ratsun and read some of the trans related threads. This one http://community.ratsun.net/topic/66405-transmission-identification-fs5w71b/ has a link to a chart of trans ratios. The CL seller may be trustworthy and know what he is selling, but it seems possible he doesn't know exactly which 5-speed he has and the condition is less than hoped for, at least at that price. As far as condition, you will probably have to take his word for it, but with a little reading you will be able to tell if you are buying a 280Z or ZX of truck tranny. All will fit, but the ratio differences may be an issue for you.

To a Spokane area cheapskate like me, the price seems a bit on the high side unless the tranny is rebuilt. But my point of reference is Spokane Pull n Save prices ($65 for a tranny). That probably isn't realistic for you since you would need to drive across the state, pull the trans, then drive back if there was a problem and you had to return it.

I see you are new to Ratsun (Welcome, by the way!) so I don't know if you can place a wanted ad in the Classifieds here yet. Someone in your area may have a good 5-speed and other parts they can sell you.

If you keep your 4-speed clutch, you need to swap the throw-out bearing sleeve over to the 5-speed (unless they are the same length sleeve). The TO sleeve has to match the clutch, not the tranny.

The CL tranny may be well worth the price to you. I'm not familiar with "z man", but for $850 I'm guessing that may be a rebuilt trans with new bearings and synchro rings. Dunno. The CL trans may or may not be rebuilt and may not need it anyway. You just have to talk to the seller and listen to his "story". If the story is it is out of his own Z that got wrecked or he did a V-8 install, it is more promising than if he said he got it from a buddy who thought it was good. Although either story could still be a good trans.

The dogleg 5-speed in my 510 has a slight resistance shifting into 2nd when cold. Slightly annoying, but doesn't seem to be getting worse so I can live with it. I only paid $50 for the tranny so if it goes bad I won't feel too hurt. If I was doing a nice restoration on a Z car or racing, I would probably want to go with a much better condition trans.

The other factor is time. If the CL trans seems like a good one when you talk to the guy, you can buy it and stick it in this weekend. Waiting to find a cheaper one might take weeks or months. Spending more money to get something done sooner is sometimes worthwhile.

If the "z man" gets anyone to pay $850 for a trans and $600 for a diff I would be shocked. Those prices are beyond ridiculous. A close ratio zx trans that you cannot test typically goes for $250, maybe less. Rear diff $50-200 depending on ratio and condition.

You can buy a whole Z for 850 and part out the rest.

"Boy that guy sure knows his stuff!". Yeah, when I grow up I dream of knowing as much about trannys as he does. :D

I'm not sure but I think the dogleg pic in the DQ article is one I posted years ago. If so it is the exact same trans I just mentioned as having the weak 2nd gear synchro. Small world! And maybe as close to immortality as I'll ever get.

Hobbes - Thanks for posting what I suspected. Us cheapo E WA guys don't know what you westsiders pay for stuff. Seems whenever I journey over there everything is higher priced, so I thought maybe your Datsun parts were higher. Onetime saw a price list from a Portland P&S and prices were noticeably higher than Spokane, but not enough higher that is is worth driving clear over here.

It bothers my (though only slightly) how many Spokane P&S 5-speeds, L20Bs, Z22s, etc. that have probably been crushed over the years that someone would love to have. But for me to take the time (I'm an hour from Spokane) to pull an engine or tranny which possibly could have problems and get it to the coast where someone could actually use it just doesn't seem worthwhile. But I've been having goon fever really bad lately and needing a goon to haul parts so I can sell them and get rich sounds like a really great rationalization for getting one!

Met the guy and he has a really clean 240z. It's a automatic so he bought everything he needed for the swap, got it out of a 280zx 2+2. He's moving and lost the garage and had to sell everything. Needless to say I bought it. Thanks everyone for the input. Stay tuned for my "help me" post for installing I haha :)

That sounds encouraging. If the guy bought the pieces to use in his own Z he may have been careful in picking what he got.

If you don't understand what I said about the clutch TO bearing sleeve, please ask. Looking at this chart:

http://datsun510.com/photopost/showphoto.php?photo=6980&title=225mm-and-240mm-clutch-t-2fo-bearing-sleeve-specs&cat=3129

it appears the sleeves are different. Maybe you got the ZX flywheel and clutch and are going to use them. If so, use the sleeve that came with the 5-speed.

I don't know if there is anything special to look for in swapping in the 5-speed. You may need to loosen the motor mounts to let the rear of the engine drop down a little, but maybe not. I pulled a 5-speed out of a Maxima at P&S once and don't think I had to loosen the motor mounts, but it may have more clearance at the firewall than a Z. I recall having a fight getting the exhaust loose to get it out of the way.

If you have a 3 day weekend you can have it in by Monday. :D Have fun with it!

The release collar is matched to your current pressure plate. You are only changing the transmission. Keep the release collar that you have now and put on the clutch arm of the new transmission. Replace the bearing with a new one though. They aren't easy to get at to replace so don't cheap out on it. Get a Made in Japan one.
