5150 Wll
First off, I've searched for several days and haven't found a solution. 72 wagon, brand new "correct" fuse box(thanks Mike), no wiring butchering. The problem is my temp or fuel gauges will not work. I have two clusters and neither work. I've looked at some wiring diagrams and see a voltage regulator listed, but I can't find one or which one it may be. Based on the searching I've done, it sounds as if it's a bad VR. The VR is not on or attached the cluster so I'm guessing its somewhere up in the dash??? Any help identifying this appreciated. Quote Link to comment
TENDRIL
ground them individually, if they dont move, one of two things broken wire/connector or a seized or stuck gauge annnnnnnd there's this http://community.ratsun.net/topic/54598-bad-gauge-cluster-voltage-regulator-easy-2-fix/ 1 Quote Link to comment
tr8er
Location: What it should look like: Not a 510, but similar to installed image: Most folks switch to alternators with internal regulators. This might be your preferred alternative to replacing the regulator, but only if your alternator is aging already. Quote Link to comment
Dolomite
He's talking about the gauge voltage regulator, which is probably not bad. Take the cluster out and separate the temp and fuel gauges, clean all contact points and trace the power paths on the circuit board to make sure everything is kosher. If they still don't work, try jumping the positive and negative points straight to the battery to see if the regulator is truly bad or not. I did this with mine and found they were good and after cleaning and reinstalling they work good as new. Edit: the regulator is on the circuit board the two gauges are screwed to. Make sure your connection to the sending units are in good shape. Quote Link to comment
MikeRL411
Fuel / Temp is the in dash Voltage regulator! Any simple search will unload a bucket of "fixes" ncluding a "new" solid state replacement[several] cure. That's what the search button is for. Quote Link to comment
bilzbobaggins
if you cant find it on the back of the cluster, then some po might have tossed it for whatever reason. I hope this helps you out. good luck Jef Quote Link to comment
5150 Wll
Thanks for the info guys. I swapped to the new gauge cluster I have which on the surface appears in much better condition than the one that came in the car. Anyhow, the fuel gauge is now working, but the temp still isn't. Temp will peg out when i ground the sender wire. I'll get it figured out Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If grounding the sender wire pegs the meter then the sender is bad. 1 Quote Link to comment
5150 Wll
once again you are correct Mike.... I went to clean the connector and the end of it fell right off the sender....NAPA will have a new one for me tomorrow 1 Quote Link to comment
