datzenmike Posted May 30, 2015 Report Share Posted May 30, 2015 It's for catalytic equipped vehicles. They get hot, hotter than the exhaust that flows into them often. They use a catalyst to force unburned hydrocarbons in the exhaust to mix with oxygen (from an air injection into the exhaust manifold) and burn, producing heat. Normally this is a small amount but when the choke is on or if for other reasons the exhaust runs rich like a fouled plug it may over heat and become dangerously hot. Quote Link to comment
