It is an FS5W71B

Made '80 and after

Has L series front cover on it.

Can't tell from the outside what it's from. But if you place in first gear and mark the input and output splines, then turn the input 20 times while counting the output turns...

5.5 turns..... wide ratio. Very unlikely. Used in 4x4 trucks after '80 so won't have a speedometer drive in it.

6 turns........ mid ratio with 3.321 first. Likely from an '80 2wd truck or 810/Maxima

6.5 turns..... close ratio with 3.062 first gear. Definitely from an '80-'83 280zx. Has monster 25% or 25.5% overdrive 5th.

Well, it'll be stronger than the 63-series 4-speed but that much overdrive is useless in a road-race car unless you're already running out of revs. 1st is awful tall for an L18, too.   A 71-series 4-speed might be a better (and cheaper, as plenty of folks can't get rid of them except as scrap) choice.

Thanks for the info.

I race with Lemons/Chump, so needs to hold up over a 24 hr period with a constant beating from 4-6 drivers.

So since I blew up two transmissions in the race this past weekend (snychro keys poping out and jamming synchro), I know I need something beefier.  I went from the 13" rims to 14" and am running a 195/60.  Thanks to some feedback here, thinking the added power and increased wheel width is the culprit.

So the FS5W63 dogleg is a contender and I have a lead on one as well, but read a few posts that it wasn't that strong either?  Maybe strong enough for my application?  My real concern with it is the pattern, I bet someone will drop it in 1st.

Since most of the tracks we stayed in 3rd the whole time, I doubt we'd hit 5th as well.  But a solid 2-4 ratio with a wicked strong tranny would be a bonus.

Dogleg is a shit transmission for racing or loads or everything else...

good link for options on trans. - - http://www.gracieland.org/cars/techtalk/gearing2.html

might consider looking for a nismo comp trans?  steel synchros over the brass.  can also find one with a 1:1 5th ratio.

or can you take a KA tranny and put a L bell housing on it? for something stronger...

^^^ This is what i said in a longer way in your other tranny thread..

L18 likes to rev,,  you don't need 5speed for track racing unless your in the Daytona 500. and 620 4speeds are ubercheeeep

The close ratio trans really comes into it's own if combined with much taller differential gears. A 4.375 would lower all gears and you might even get into 5th! Instead of running everything in third you would have to down shift and use second or even first in the corners. The engine would stay revved up and making power. The zx is a 'close ratio' transmission, so less RPM drop between shifts.

Except the ratio between 4th and 5th is the widest of any L-series transmissions (the 83 ZX one).  It's not really a close-ratio transmission, that's a major misnomer.  Sure, the 1-2 transition is closer, but the 2-3 transition is WIDER than the prior Z and ZX trans, 3-4 is the SAME, and 4-5 is a huge (26% vs 15% overdrive).

A FS5W63A "dogleg" is weaker than the ones you've been breaking.   A 71 is the way to go.
