DarkStar620
Hey guys first post on here. Just wanted to show off my new (old) 72 Datsun 620. Got it a few months ago but wanted to do some work on it before I started a build log. Little back story on the truck. I saw it for sale on Kijiji in December for $1500 CAD and messaged the guy. He said he was leaving for a few months for work and that if I wanted it I would have to come and buy it that night. Didn't have the money or the time off and asked him to message me when he got back from his work trip. Few months latter he surprisingly messaged me asking if I was still interested, I had the money and decided to go look at it. He said that if I didn't want to drive up there that he would drive it down to me ( A solid 5 hour drive) for a delivery fee of $150, so in total I was gonna be paying $1650. I thought why not, it shows he has trust in his old Datsun and it saves me 5 hours of potential problems! So he messages me that morning that he was leaving to come down, I was happy, me and my dad were pretty stoked (My dad has a 1972 Datsun 510) and me and my dad hung around waiting. A few hours latter I see a few missed calls and more text messages. Basically the news I really didn't want to read happened, the 620 broke down on the highway, about 45 minutes out from where we are  . Turns out the yoke of the tranny had torn off and wasn't gonna be driving any where. So I had a decision to make on whether or not me and my dad were going to drive out to where he was to look at it on the side of the highway or if we should just forget about it. The guy I'm buying it from says why don't I get it towed to a shop and we can assess the damages. My dad says just tell him to tow it to our house and we can make a deal on it, and hopefully lower the price. The seller agrees and says he will pay for the tow and sell it to me for $1000. So I basically bought this truck with out even seeing it and the better news was that we had a spare 5 speed at home! It worked out pretty good for us, the seller was a really nice guy and had a 280ZX at home. We had a few beers with him, looked over the truck, signed a few papers and he went on his way. A little about the shape of the truck, the truck wasn't in to bad of shape haha. Some surface rust and a few rust holes around the doors and what not where the only concern on the exterior. Windows intact, all lights and turn signals worked, truck started no problem even though it couldn't got any where  The interior seemed clean, carpets and mats seemed decent and the bench was actually in good shape, dash had a few cracks but nothing crazy, all windows went down, door handles there, mirrors there, etc. Of course though the real problem was under the carpet and mats. Thankfully the previous owner welded in new floors, but they did a piss poor job of everything else. Used home caulking glue to "seal" seams and holes that of course held water and made a hell of a mess in the rust department. Riveted in new sheet metal, just a bad job :poop: All the welding that has been done so far has been my dad, so huge thanks to him. He has never welded before and just had 3 strokes not to long ago so I would say he's doing a bang up job! Anyways enough reading I am sure you just want pictures so here are some pictures. Also I will link my album that I update regularly. Sorry for the not so stellar quality but all I have is my phone for a camera. TL;DR Bought a truck without even seeing it and it has worked out so far! Original Pictures of the truck. (Before any work) The Truck the day I got it next to the 510 3 Quote Link to comment
DarkStar620
First thing off was the grill of all things... Next was taking out the carpet and crappy old mat and the bench. Didn't look to bad, some surface rust really. Next was getting the dash out and cleaning it up a little bit. 2 Quote Link to comment
DarkStar620
Next thing me and my dad did was disconnect everything to get ready to pull the motor out. I should mention that the guy I bought it from threw an L20B in it. As of right now I don't plan on putting anything different in it, except for cleaning up the L20B. Maybe an SR20 in the future! Getting the hoist ready :D Well after what my dad told me was a lot longer than it should have ever taken, we got the dam motor and tranny out. It seriously took us like 5 hours. The transmision was fu*king seized on there. all the bolts were off it was hanging a solid 8 feet in the air and the tranny wouldn't budge. It was a hassle to say the least. Think we got it out at around 3am and I had work at 9am... 1 Quote Link to comment
DarkStar620
Next thing me and my dad tackled was the rot in the passenger side corners. Sorry these photos were kind of hard to get at. I tried to capture how bad it was. and this is the driver side, well what we could see. The kick-board is still on in this photo so we had no idea how bad it would be. It was worse than the passenger side of course... Here you can see all the crappy caulking glue stuff that was used by the previous owner. Here is the passenger side cleaned up. New sheet metal to cover the corner hole, and under the bondo on the floor there is a piece of sheet metal on the out side. The side of the door frame has new sheet metal welded to it and we sealed everything while we were at it. We POR-15 all around it and we also POR-15 the floors. Floors with a fresh coat of POR-15 Next thing patched was the door damage. 1 Quote Link to comment

DarkStar620
Got red LED bulbs for my dash, got the dash cleaned up a bit too. Still haven't filled the cracks in or anything, the dash had kind of been ignored. You can see the dash cracks here. Next thing we did was take the driver side door off, the door it's self needs some work. Also the hinges are beat so I need new ones and the metal where the bottom hinges is held is all rotted out. The rot is real Cut a hole to fiberglass over the drain port and where water was leaking in. Driver side The entire kickboard part, what ever you wana call it was rusted out so my dad welded a new piece over it. It gets prettier! I just have no pictures of it. The door jam repair POR-15 the wheel wells then sprayed undercoating. So the cab wasn't even attached to the frame at the front. It was rotted out by the front mounts. The passenger side in the first pic looks bad but is really solid, the driver side was just bouncing around... The rubber mounts in between the frame and the front end. Bolt snapped and calling the rubber brittle is an understatement... 2 Quote Link to comment

DarkStar620
We had to fix this problem, my dad made a few pieces and welded them on. Don't judge the welds haha! Might not be pretty but it's a hell of a lot stronger  The welder. POR-15 on the fenders. Looks slick. That's all the updates I have for tonight. Thanks for looking. Let me know what you think, would love to here it. I'll keep updating until it's done, and if I have learned anything from this forum, or my dad is that it's never truly done... 4 Quote Link to comment

DarkStar620
Been a while but got a few more updates. More body work, starting to look more and more like a truck! Bondo and filler then sand then prime, rinse and repeat. But in better news, we rolled the 510 out! Dad even took it for a drive around the block. Started up great, the back driver side caliper needs to be bled though. 4 Quote Link to comment
DarkStar620
Been a little while but thought I would update. Started off with the bed. Not sure where to even start on repairs for this. New bed? Engien bay primered Engine bay painted Also one of these are laying around the garage. Kinda thinking about putting it in the 620... Will a 280zx 5 speed work with the KA24E? I mean it kinda leans to the side but thats managable right? Itll bolt up, but will it be a pain is what I am asking. 2 Quote Link to comment
Farmer
Swap bell housing with Ka trans onto the 5 speed or buy Napz 2.4 tranny. 2 Quote Link to comment
