Dead baterry

Recommended Posts

So I have a 78 620 .. I use to drive my truck almost everyday until now that I had carb problems I let it sit for 3 days and my battery dies I took it to get charged and they told me it was a bad batery when it was 5months old! Not sure if it's the baterry that sucks (autozone) or there's something else wrong... I do have my radio that's burned out still pluged in would that be the cause of killing batery? It is hooked up directly to the battery but the radio won't turn on anymore ..

Is there a voltage regulator that can get ruined or something ..

Another thing I charged my battery.. I go ahead a turn the truck on .. It takes a while (you know carb problems ) I thouch the positive post.. And it was in between hot and warm.. Is that normal?

Help thanks

recharge the battery and reinstall and do this test.

clean batter connection and use a mutimeter if tyou get it running to ck the voltage on and see where your charging and put on the lights and maybe hear fan to see whats the voltage at 2000rpms and see if it above say 13.5 volt. 14 would be perfect

78 is a IR type alternator I believe but look it up. or have it cked out otherwise a bad alt can run the car for awhile till it dies.

this helps to catch things before its too late

Another thing is disconnect a fully charged battery for 3 days. Re-connect and start it to see if it held a charge. If it did then you have a parasitic draw on it when sitting.

For example I had a vehicle once the would go dead in a day or so . Turned out the horn was stuck on and the original owner just pulled the wires off the horns to shut them up but the relay was still on. See what I mean?

Maybe that's what the stereo is doing ...

Then power IS being drained. Connect a test lamp between either battery post and the cable... it will light up showing a draw. Disconnect that radio and see if it goes out. If not start unplugging fuses until it goes out. The fuse that makes it go out has the draw on it somewhere.

A "burned out radio" almost certainly has a internal short circuit to ground.  Aren't transistors and integrated circuits fun?  Disconnect whatever is left of the radio and you will probably cure your problem.

Not fun to deal with but very interesting
