Az smog requirements???

Recommended Posts

First time posting....... But I've been lurking for awhile as I'm building my 620. I bought a 78 620 kc ,bone stock, in rough condition for 500. I pulled the motor(l20b) and rebuilt it...... I deleted the smog pump and vacuum lines to clean up the engine. But I haven't done emissions on the truck yet. I want to put a 32/36 weber in it sence the OG hitatci is beyond repair. Can I pass arizona emissions without the smog stuff and with a new weber carb? Any advise one smog delete in Arizona??????? Thanks in advance..... Pics to come

You tell me. Your location in Arizona may dictate if there is a visual or actual 'smog test'. Phone the DMV and find out. There may only be a visual check that everything is there so it would be better to have left everything, check, do the test and then remove it. Where are you in Arizona?

I haven't purchased the weber yet....... Keeping somewhat stock motor...... Next question is 32/36 or 38??.... Electric or manual ??? Looks like some of the wiring under the hood has been hacked up so finding the wire for the choke may come as a challenge. Also I want to wire up an efan...... Just cuz they r cool...... Ideas, thought or emotional out burst on this ???

Weber?... Redline

Electric choke to match the 620 set up. Electric chke wire is Blue. The idle curt solenoid wire beside it is Red. Both may have a black harness cover over them. You can jumper the choke power wire to the + side of the coil if it's been removed.

efan? Electric fan? Your '78 will have a clutch fan. They are part of the water pump and cannot be separated. You would need a much earlier water pump with the bolt on fan blades. The electric fan would also need a temp sensor in the rad or the return line to the engine to turn it on and off. A switch on the dash is retarded. What if your g/f borrows it and leaves idling and over heats it? Electric fan HAS to be foolproof and automatic just like the fan it replaces or you may as well leave it as it is.

Redline ... With e-choke......Copy that

Back to the Efan..... My current water pump is leaking.... Need it replaced..... It has a small 4 blade fan with no clutch. I have replaced the radiator with a new aluminum 3 core...... Fits great. Now, i do have a new water pump...... With a clutch (well it had a clutch on it, I removed it.... Came off fairly easy). I have 13 blade efan laying around. It will fit between the rad and pump pulley withe the clutch removed. Now keep in mind I live in Phoenix...... Crazy hot summers. So, yes a switch on the dash would look retarded but not as retarded as letting my wife(in my case) drive it. Second..... More cfm from the bigger faster fan=cooler engine. Again thoughts, ideas and emossion out burst are always welcome

I have run several Datsun Nissan trucks through AZ emissions in Phoenix with Webers.  The last one being a 1986 720 King Cab that I will have to retest next month.  The emission station I use is the one on West Roosevelt as it is convenient for me.

When I ran the 86 through It had Nevada plates and I was changing my Registration to AZ.  I hooked up the EGR before going through and that was the only thing they physically checked under the hood other than visual on vacuum lines.  The EGR valve they pulled off the vacuum line and checked for vacuum.  The did the gas cap test and then ran it through the sniffer test.  It passed with low readings.

I have run several 521s through emissions over the years and they all had Weber 32/36s on them.  all had L motors except one 1970 that I put a Z20 5 speed in.  They all passed and all of them had the gas caps tested for sealing.  One failed the gas cap test and I passed after replacing the cap.

The 521 were required to have smog pumps and did not.  When I was questioned about the missing smog pumps I told them the smog pumps are no longer available for these old trucks and they let it go.

My F10 has a thermostat switch in the radiator return hose (threaded into a small piece of aluminum pipe), works well. It could be ran with an after market efan.  I have an extra, but I imagine you could get a decently thick piece of aluminum and tap in a thermo switch.
