dimlight65
I think I have decided to use the X-pipe on the Baja 1200. 1 Quote Link to comment
q-tip
So long as it gets used on something, be it the Baja 1200 or the shelf of shame. Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
The item I purchased, for which the Y-pipe was needed, arrived today. And, as the actress said to the bishop, it is much bigger than I expected. I'm going to ask a cohort if he would be willing to swing by Summit on his way home to look for a proper Y-pipe... because this thing is really cool. No, I'm still not saying what it is until we can post pictures of it! Patience, grasshopper! 1 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
I did pick up said y-pipe, which it now appears we will not be using, so... Here's Tim's new exhaust tip, that may end up on his 1200... Tim came up with an interesting idea on how to make a dual side exit exhaust. Start with some bends and make this... Then we will weld two pipes into it, something like this... Attach those to the two mufflers, then you have a nice big sort of resonator chamber for the exhaust that will exit on either side just in front of each rear tire. It's wacky, but we think it'll work just fine. Current plan is to insert said pipes like this, hoping it will keep both pipes somewhat divided... ^_^ The big pipe is made from 3" tubing and we have some 20" long chrome 3" tips for it. Small pipe is 2" tubing which mates up well with the current mufflers. And in case it isn't obvious, the dip in the center is so it can go over the driveshaft, because that shit was right in the way... 1 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
I think I have decided to use the X-pipe on the Baja 1200. After some consideration, there's no way I'm running a dual 2.5" zorst on a Z-20! I'm sending it back to Amazon. Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
I went to the butt-ass butt-butt cold shop today to have a look at this again. I took a measurement from the driveshaft to the muffler then transferred that to the big pipe. Yeah, Houston... we have a problem. Y'all see that weld where the hump in the 3" pipe begins? That is where the muffler stub wants to intercept the big pipe. Before I did anything permanent, I called it a day. John and I will grok it again this Saturday. 1 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Well, we spent a lot of time working on getting the driver's seat mount figured out, then ran into a problem. See, the seats I bought were a fairly tight squeeze between the doghouse and wall. Then today we noticed that the doghouse is offset to the passenger side by two inches. So now there's not a chance in hell the passenger seat will actually fit in the van... So it is back to the drawing board on that. Tim has some fun ideas on that front... Also after grokking the exhaust situation, it's looks like we are going to back up and punt and do a dual exit on the passenger side instead, so... 1 Quote Link to comment
Ratwagon1600
Grok? No entiendo. Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
Grok? No entiendo. Yeah, we're not technically using the word correctly. We mean "to study or examine something in order to understand it." Robert Heinlein meant for it to mean "to understand something intuitively." But I often use words I don't fully understand when I want to sound photosynthesis. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grok 4 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Mockup of the new seat... Lots and lots of welding... Now bolted in for a test sit... Plan B for exhaust... Right side goes into the mufflers, left side will exit right in front of the tire... 1 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
I hate to be pedantic, but this is at least plan D for the zorst... ok, ok, I LOVE to be pedantic! Also, you forgot to show/tell them the best part about the passenger seat... It spins round backward! Quote Link to comment
]2eDeYe
Captains chair for the passenger? 2 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
It spins round backward! Oh yeah, that bit... Quote Link to comment
q-tip
Captains chair for the passenger? Perhaps passenger doesn't want to see the driver's driving? 1 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
Captains chair for the passenger? Perhaps passenger doesn't want to see the driver's driving? Actually, it is more to create a conversation pit sort of thing... and/or not have two MoG sitting on the sofa to watch the TV. Hmm, I might have to make a dining table of some sort now. 1 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Did some more exhausting today... Took the two elbows and welded extensions on them... Also welded on a bracket to mount a hanger to, as well as took a 3" exhaust tip and squeezed it down on the end to slip over the pipes just to see how it looked/worked... This was deemed too "mad bosozoku" for this project so we did something different... And a test fit on the van... That was deemed acceptable so we took that off to seam weld the tips on... I really like this picture for some reason... ^_^ Had a little difficulty welding the tips on because they really need a MIG not a TIG, so Tim will have a muffler shop finish the job at some point in the week. Should be permanently installed next week. 2 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
Four hours a week, three weeks a month, just isn't enough time for these projects. I'm planning to go to the shop tomorrow after lunch to install the driver's seat. I might take another stab at zooking up the huge gaps twixt the tips and pipes with the TIG. Worst case*, I'll do as D-freak said and have an muffler shop fill it in with a MIG. Well, truly worst case* is I go buy myself a MIG so I can fill the gaps... we'll see. * By "worst case" I mean most expensive, of course. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Tim finished the welding on the exhaust tips, so I scrubbed it down and put some high temp paint on it... 2 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Exhaust in and (hopefully) finished... Tim found some cool purple door knobs, too. We are thinking one for the steering wheel spinner, one for the shift knob, and maybe one for the e-brake handle... Also finished welding up the passenger side seat mount... After that, i scrubbed it up and painted it as well. Should be going back in next week but we can't do the final install until we put carpet in the front half of the van... 1 Quote Link to comment

We are thinking one for the steering wheel spinner, one for the shift knob, and maybe one for the e-brake handle... Tee hee! Purple knobs! Ok, now that my inner 8yo has had his say, I want to add "Driver's seat adjuster handle" to that list of recipients Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
I'm not sure if we ever 'splained why we moved the zorst from center exit at the rear to this side shooter arrangement. Trailer hitch. We're going to install a trailer hitch after all. Ok, that seemed like it was going to be a longer/more interesting story when I started typing. Meh, deal with it. And I see that my "Post Whoring" has, once again, pushed us to a new page. *Sorry about that. *And by "Sorry about that." I mean "I'm totally not sorry at all!" 2 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
add "Driver's seat adjuster handle" to that list of recipients Oh, snap... Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Finishing the welding on the driver's seat frame... Both seats in for a test sit... Driver's seat has a slider, passenger does this... I want to add "Driver's seat adjuster handle" to that list of recipients And so we did... Also spent some time looking at locations for the rear speaker boxes and still not sure we've decided... 1 Quote Link to comment
