dimlight65
Instead of Hello Kitty, it needs a Raiders bobble head :) I don't know what that means, but... No. Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
Still wet in that pic, should dull a bit when dry. It did not, by the way... not as much as I had hoped thought it would. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Purple hub spacer... Purple steering wheel... We needed access to some bits (see below) so we elected to ditch the mesh screen and get some black paint in these holes while we're at it... We wanted to remove the fresh air boxes for building a brace to go between them, and figured we might as well clean them up and paint them while we had them out... The plan from here... 3 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Attaching speaker pods to the brace... Mounting speakers... Grills on... Air boxes and brace bolted back into the van... Time for turn signals. Previous owner painted them yellow when they resprayed the van, so we had to fix that... Some shiny silver... Tim got some new lenses and gaskets... Original lenses are chrome around the edges, and I like that look. I thought for a minute about painting the outsides edges silver, but then had an idea. These are clear. So why not just paint the inside silver? ^_^ Both done... New seals were kind of floppy so I glued them to the light bezel so they'd stay in place... And all installed with new bulbs... Tim made some cool rubber mounts for the amp (not visible in this pic, sorry) and mounted it to the passenger wheelhouse under the seat... Also got the area around the headlights painted back, but you'll have to wait until next week to see that... 3 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
I just ordered the RCA cables to hook up the amp, a belt to make door-pulls, and some rubber bulb-seal door-edging to "seal" the gap in the doghouse top cover. Of course, being the cheap-ass* that I am, I opted for "free 5-8 business day shipping" soooo... none of that will arrive before next weekend. *Ok, so it's technically "broke-ass" but who's counting? 2 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
Air boxes and brace bolted back into the van... Looking at this picture, I just realized we fucked up. All those wires should be behind the cross bar. Wait, should I have sent that in a PM or e-mail? 1 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Wait, should I have sent that in a PM or e-mail? Probably... 1 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
OK, so I went to the shop after work this evening and had a look at the wiring-harness-is-on-the-wrong-side-of-the-crossbar situation. The crossbar is almost straight above the hole in the floor where the wiring harness goes through to the engine bay. I finger we'll attach the wiring to the bar and drop straight down. It isn't how I wanted the wiring to run, but it is what it is. Besides, there isn't any way to attach the harness to the front bulkhead, short of using sticky-back zip-tie clamps... which never stay stuck, so it would have been hanging out in space to some extent anyway. I'm prepared to be OK with the setup. Once resigned to a "solution" for that problem, I ran a wire from the stereo head-unit hole (remote on, sort of thing), and the wires from the front speakers, to the amp... area. I didn't terminate them at this time though. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
After much cussing and fiddling. I was able to get the wiring for the LED halos pushed through the stock wiring grommet... Then cleaned the overspray off the headlight rings and got the headlights installed... After polishing the headlight doors for the third time, I said fuck it. Discussed it with Tim, decided to just go ahead paint them silver. Then grabbed the grill and installed it too... . It now has a complete face for the first time ever. While I was working on that (with help from Tim), he was busy wiring up the halos, rerouting some of the wiring, installing the turn signal switch and a few other things... Next week should be the final wire tuck for the dash. Couldn't do it today due to lack of RCA cables to go from the radio to the amp. 1 Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
We didn't have any good arm rests for this, and new ones are a bit spendy (and poke you in the hip), So Tim got a bright idea... I like it. Might even do this to my 210... While I did that, Tim got cracking on the dash wire tuck. Came out pretty good, and he installed the radio too... Got some trim with a bulb seal for the doghouse lid... I think Tim has cooled on the idea of the split lid, though. He's been making noise about buying another one to replace it... And we drilled a hole and popped in a grommet for the battery cable to go through the side of the doghouse... 2 Quote Link to comment

He's been making noise about buying another one to replace it... I wonder if I've got enough lead in my pencil to zook that lid back together... We're planning on padding and covering it so... Hmm... dimlight65
Oops, I just ran us to another page. Everyone go back a page and look at John's post of the progress! I mean... or don't. I'm not the boss of you. 1 Quote Link to comment

dimlight65
I'm not sure if we've mentioned that I'm planning to make the back of this thing into a camper... I'm planning to make the back of this thing into a camper. So last night when I got up for the fourth time to go pee, I thought, "It's really going to suck having to open the door and crawl out of the back of the van six times a night to pee while camping. I ought to use that extra 10 gallon fuel tank for black water!" Then I thought about hauling around 10 gallons of pee... I think I'll open the door and crawl out. 2 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
I found an interesting thing on the Amazons the other day. It's a tent-like cabana-vestibule thingy. I think we can adapt/modify/improve on this to make a... well, a cabana-vestibule thingy for the side door. I figure if we can make it "seal out" the weather at least as good as a tent, we should be golden. In other totally-non-passive-aggressive-posting news, we insulated and reinstalled the house of dogs today... and by "we," I mean John single-handedly insulated the thing. Thank you sir. I did zook the lid back together... ish, and did a smattering of re-wire work which was needed. Birthday (well, the anniversary thereof, to be pedantic) number 52 looks like a doable goal! Hmm, B-52? I kinda like the sound of that. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Some cool stuff showed up, including some stickers (Tim's favorite local radio station in the 70s/80s) and some butyl tape... Best mod so far... ^_^ In other totally-non-passive-aggressive-posting news, we insulated and reinstalled the house of dogs today... and by "we," I mean John single-handedly insulated the thing. Thank you sir. Drilled a few tiny but strategic holes in the doghouse, scrubbed up the inside, applied some spray adhesive to the doghouse and insulation, and put it in. The wholes were for some tiny bolts and nuts with some big washers to hold it in place in case the adhesive gives up later on... Tim then got some new hardware to install the doghouse in the van. We also scraped all the old sealer from the floor and doghouse, used the new roll of butyl tape to replace it with, then bolted it in... And you can also see why we installed the grommet for the battery cable now. ^_^ As Tim said, he welded the lid back together since we are now planning to install the wall behind the doghouse instead of on top of it. We will cover that at a later date because we are planning to insulate it as well, and will likely be adding some foam to the lid and wrapping it in vinyl. 1 Quote Link to comment
Duncan
I remember how hot those vans get in the summer... Good idea on insulating the crap out of the dog house the best you can  Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Good idea on insulating the crap out of the dog house the best you can  Actually thinking about using two layers on the lid... ^_^ Tim got his exhaust tip thingie installed today. Looks pretty cool too... And his downpipes and mufflers are on too. Now we just need to get the muffler shop to connect these to the rear tips with about 3 feet of pipe... Tim got some new welding rod but it's a bit dainty, so he got crafty... Squeeze three pieces in the vice, connect the other end to a drill.. Voila! Nice fat welding wire that melts easy and flows out nice... 5 Quote Link to comment

datsunfreak
Installed an external vent for the fuel tank just above the filler. And Tim made a cool plate to cover the top of the fuel tank for easy access later. 2 Quote Link to comment
dimlight65
A set of spring shackles and bushings for the front suspension are on the way. We ought to be able to knock that out next Saturday. I'm contemplating removing one leaf per side as well to drop the nose a bit. I also bought a roll if carpet yesterday on a whim... because I'm dumb that way. Oh, yeah. It is totally purple carpet, thanks for asking. And I have a drawing of how I want to build the "moving pedestal" of my convertible sofa/bed. Looks like it's only going to weigh somewhere around 85 pounds... MUCH lighter than I was afeared it was going to weigh while drawing it! 4 Quote Link to comment

I figure if we can make it "seal out" the weather at least as good as a tent, we should be golden. The more I looked at the thing on the Amazons, the less I liked it. I decided that I'd rather make a couple "tent walls" to "seal" the van and have some privacy in the vestibule of the open doors. One will be in the opening of the van and the other will be between the doors. (On Saturday I'll hold a up a blanket and have Datsunfreak shoost some pictures of what I'm thinking.) I thought I'd buy an old tent and cannibalize a couple walls with zippers to do this. Then it hit me, I bet I could find DIY tent making materials here on these intergoogles. I did find a site and "ordered" some material and zippers. It wasn't until later that I realized the site is based in Florida. Yeah, I might never get that order after all. And yes, I acknowledge that I am a douche for being annoyed that they might inconvenience me because their livelihood is under water. At least I'm not bitching about it in the inter... oh, wait. 2 Quote Link to comment
