1972 Datsun 510 4 Door Project REBOOT!

1972 Datsun 510 4dr 5spd SOHC KA24E

Long story short I had a friend bring this car from Oregon state to North Dakota back in 2008. He sold it to a guy who blew up the original KA. I found it for sale online one day and bought it the next day. This is how I found the car when I went to go pick it up.

Got it to the shop and started getting the bad KA out and putting another one in.

Got that all done and I ran it like this for awhile.

Then I managed to hydro lock that engine after a couple years. So i began stripping the car down while i waited to come across another good KA.

I put down some spray on bed liner for the floor after taking out all the old rotted stuff. I then did some other random odds and ends like:

Custom seat rail sliders

The spare well was rusty and had a few minor holes so i cut it out and added some steel in its place.

Dyed the Rear seats black.

http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af111/72DAT510/510/IMG_20120423_171552_zpsjnywq2mt.jpg

Made My own LED tails.

http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af111/72DAT510/510/IMG_2536_zpsgmonp0ng.jpg

I made some interior door panels.

http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af111/72DAT510/510/IMG_2552_zpscvngvlo9.jpg

Then I found a fresh KA and trans from a 240.

http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af111/72DAT510/510/IMG_2573_zpseu0wd3n2.jpg

I installed a CAN/AM POWER PRODUCTS easy wiring box

http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af111/72DAT510/510/IMG_2560_zpsnitq2zoj.jpg

And re-did the exhaust a bit. 3inch SS off the header and collector.

And it Runs again!!!!! First time in 5 years!!! (video)

So I was almost finished with it all I had to do was some finishing touches and I would be able to get it back on the road. Then one day I went to go move it around the shop a bit and the rear drums had seized up on me. It wouldn't even budge.

That is when  decided to do a rear disc conversion.

Upgraded to the Futofab Adjustable Lower Control Arms and Datsun 510 Rear Camber / Toe Adjusters.

http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af111/72DAT510/510/IMG_2548_zpsdzjwla3v.jpg

Upgraded the rear suspension some more with REAR COILOVER CONVERSION FOR DATSUN 510 from TechnoToyTuning.

It already had 280 big brakes, coilovers and TIEN camber plates on the front so I just media blast those till powder coating could get done.

I hit my major hang up and ultimately it lead to where im at now posting this thread.... while removing the rear axles I was not aware of the locking nut on there and the last 1/2in of threads got destroyed.

http://i999.photobucket.com/albums/af111/72DAT510/510/IMG_2556_zpsxjj6ozgv.jpg

I had a few ideas to try and fix it but it never came to be. P soon ran into issues with not being able to find any replacement parts and if I have the whole rear end out I might as well clean up the underside of my car while I was at it but by this time my funds were dwindling pretty fast at this stage in my life. So everything came to a screeching hault. I managed to go and work on it a few times since but just never really got that itch, or it was always over shadowed by bills or lack of time.

This is how the car is sitting right now as i type this.

List of things it needs to be back on the road.

New front shocks

New Rear axles w/ locking nut

install rear brake conversion

front and rear suspension installed

glass installed and the hood/trunk/door need to be put on

I'm sure there are other minor things to be done that i'm forgetting about.

Wow. Looks like it will be a great project for someone. Lots of great stuff on it. But as to value, it is a project and a pretty big one. You already know getting all your money out of it is probably not going to happen. If selling to a friend, you probably want to give them a deal but not give it away.

I would think the car is certainly worth $3500 - $4500. Or more.

Good luck, I know it is not easy to part with a 510.

Just so you know this must remain a discussion about a fair price for your project. The pinned topics at the top of this forum say DO NOT POST FOR SALE ADS HERE! If something is for sale it goes here... http://community.ratsun.net/classifieds/category/14-cars/?sort_key=date_added&sort_order=desc You can also post a link to here to show this discussion about price if you wish but if this turns into an extension of a future for sale ad it will be removed and it will be lost.

Estimates are $3 to $4K so far but what ever is suggested add some extra and take the best offer. Illinois is a long way from nowhere so parts sources to complete it will be a challenge but if there is a demand you should get primo price for rarity. As it doesn't run it will have to be towed hundreds of miles. E-Bay probably is the best bet. Check similar condition projects.

i said to hell with the cosmetic stuff and started re assembling it today. Rear brake brackets, rear coilovers, rear crossmember, Rear Control arms, rear diff and drive shaft are installed and connected. Basically all i need to do it get my issue with the axles figured out and the rear will be back together. I'm ordering those front shocks in the link tonight and i think for minimal money i will have this thing back on its wheels shortly. that should take care of all the major projects and leave all the nickle and dime crap. My plan is still to sell it but i'm shooting for a fully streetable project car now.

How about moving this to the Project Datto section? You can edit the title to Streetable Project 510. When it's as far as you want, put it up for same then.

You can move it where ever you want to. I am just looking for as much advice on value I can get. This is the only 510 I've ever owned too.

Oh absolutely! It's only a suggestion as the title is in violation of selling outside the Classifieds. By all means collect all the info and ask all the questions you wish. This is the purpose of the forum. I don't want others posting their vehicles or parts here to get more exposure.

In Project Datto it's likely to get more member views and people drop in to see how things are progressing. The pages and info go into pages.

Thanks guys. As for moving it, I'm totally fine with that. I also believe it would get more attention there. I just didn't know if I do that or you do haha.

As for help, I am now looking for 1 hub axle and 2 replacement nuts for them. Can you run a different replacement nut on them or do they have to be those weird crush nuts?

Other than that I think I have all the parts needed too get it up and rolling. I'm not going to do all the extra stuff like painting and body work. Just slapping it back together mechanically and selling it.

It will be sad but I know if I want another someday I'll know where to start searching :-)

  • MYTE_510 changed the title to 1972 Datsun 510 4 Door Project REBOOT!

OH HEY!!!!

IM BRINGING THIS BACK FROM THE DEAD!!!!

Its almost road worthy again after a VERY long 10+ years of being on the back, way back, burner.

I was doing a bunch of work to it when I was still in Illinois about 6-7 years ago and hit a few walls. I moved to Colorado shortly after that and it went into hibernation (indoors when I left). Cats were living in it, and the weather was doing its thing until about a year and a half ago when my brother brought it out to me. Since then its been in my garage slowly getting taken apart and put back together after being totally apart for so long.

It is so close to being back on the road again!

Ill try to update this with more pictures along the way and I have a few to add from the past 10+ years haha.

Nice that you kept it all these years. Those are my favorite OEM wheels.
