J13 starter identification

Recommended Posts

Several of us are looking for starters, so I thought I'd pull together some info into a single thread.  Please feel free to update with information you have on these starters, interchange info, etc.

First... pictures of the starter off my '68 520 J13.  My starter died recently, and so I pulled it off, cleaned it up, installed a new solenoid in the hopes that's all it needed, and then threw a fresh coat of paint on it (really, that's all that matters anyway).  Here it is before it went back on the truck--

Sadly for me, the solenoid wasn't the only problem (the original one seemed a little weak compared to the new one, so I'll keep it as a spare)... the motor doesn't want to turn very fast.  In fact, after several tries on the bench, it doesn't want to turn at all.  And, on the last attempt, I got a very faint wisp of smoke out of the end cap.  Oops.  So, now I'm trying to work out a starter solution.  I'm too old to push start the truck when I want to go somewhere.

The solenoid I swapped on fit correctly and worked.  It is a Standard Motor Products #SS583 that I got from Rock. They list the following fitment--

  • Nissan 1200 1971-1973
  • Nissan 410 1965
  • Nissan 411 1964-1967
  • Nissan 520 1965-1968

I also picked up some brushes, SMP #JX98, which I have not yet tried to use, so can't confirm fitment, but Rock lists the following--

  • Nissan 410 1963-1965
  • Nissan 520 1965-1968

Rock also lists a starter drive gear #SDN153 with the following interchange (which means this part is pretty easy to find)--

  • Chevrolet Luv 1972-1975
  • Nissan 240Z 1970-1973
  • Nissan 260Z 1974-1975
  • Nissan 280Z 1975
  • Nissan 410 1965
  • Nissan 411 1967
  • Nissan 510 1968-1973
  • Nissan 520 1965-1968
  • Nissan 521 1969-1972
  • Nissan 610 1973-1974
  • Nissan 620 1972-1974
  • Nissan 710 1974

If the above fitment info from Rock is accurate, it means that, at least the individual parts aren't widely interchangeable.  However, that doesn't mean the entire starter assemblies can't be interchanged.  I'm hoping to find out more on this.  mklotz70 has hinted that the starter assemblies might interchange (or be made to work) from L-series.

It appears that the J-series starter is a #16205, while the L-series is a #16210.  They are different and do not interchange.  This is from 3 different starter rebuilder/repair shops I've spoken with, so take it for what it's worth.

I have just rebuilt this starter (also stamped #16205) with parts from Ebay for my E-1 in the 320 pickup. My research shows that this starter fits to 1965-1968 410/411 sedan, 520 pickup with J-13 engine, & late 320 pickup (E-1 engine). Probably some forklifts with J-Series engine and maybe others from this period also used this starter. Here's a link to my rebuild with some photos:

This starter has the Hitachi logo on the solenoid lever housing. Knowledge on these half century old warriors id hard to come by. Seems the old gurus from the 60's Japanese import invasion are pretty much gone. If you want some sources for parts, PM me.

Thanks for chiming in!  I was just reading your 320 updates this morning... specifically the starter stuff you apparently just finished going through.  You need to come to my house and work on my projects.  I can put you up in the guest room and provide plenty of cheap, greasy fast food.

Regarding J-series forklifts, so far, I've seen #16206 called out.  I'm not sure what the difference is between that and the #16205... maybe a different starter drive gear to fit a different flywheel??  Or maybe a slightly different clocking of the solenoid for some clearance reason that doesn't affect the cars and trucks??  Or???

Takes a couple weeks to get here from Kuwait, I'd be surprised if you could beat the price; $7 including shipping. They work perfectly and even have Datsun part numbers on the box. I used these in the starter that I rebuilt:

Thanks for the link.  I had a set of spares in the parts bin, so I'm up and running again.  I think I'll grab a set of the Lucas brushes you linked to backfill the spares.

Smart move. Did you turn or otherwise clean up the commutator?

Yes, all shiny new inside, new brush set, and new solenoid (though, I now think the old one was still good), and of course... the most important part... fresh black paint     I also ordered some Kuwaiti brushes to restock the spares box and will hang onto the old solenoid just in case.
