DatsunHiLife
My truck has me stumped. Having hard time starting I drained the battery trying to get it started. Jumped it with my jeep. Got a huge back Fire and had some pinging in my valve cover. Took it off and found that my valve lash some how popped off. Re did my valve adjustments to make sure it wasn't loose. It wasn't. How could that happen? Here's what I got right now Brand new Weber 22/36 Compression 175 on all Electric fuel pump is pushing 4psi Checked spark plugs. Running a lil rich but not to bad. Timing is perfect Adjusted valves to perfection Running Pertronix conversion. Any help would be great. Just what her to start on a dime Quote Link to comment
DatsunHiLife
The valve lash was #2 intake Quote Link to comment
mhub91
Brand new Weber 22/36 I assume you mean Weber 32/36? Is it a DGV or DGEV? (Manual or electric choke) What symptoms is it giving? Need more info, man! Quote Link to comment

Need more info, man! Hey M&M. Yea sorry. I had typed from my phone. I have the 32/36 electric choke Why is the question. Cause I got it for cheaper than the manual one. But as it is we don't have it hooked up and i removed the choke plates symptoms: i drain my battery trying to get her started. ran compression tests. all cherry. fuel pump pushing 4 psi. watching the filter fill up just fine. my last, i should say our last thing has to be the carb. datzenmike
You should have the choke connected for easy starting. 2 Quote Link to comment
Doctor510
If all else is good, cam timing, you could have just set to choke to always open rather than remove the plates, check the ignition switch, starter and all that other basic stuff. You have too much fuel pressure, 3.25 psi max, check the float level. Is the motor new or old enough to have sat for a bit? New, you have real problems, old and was sitting, old gas crappy sticky valve guides will lead to more problems. Go back to basics and start over, think outside what is written in the book, listen to the motor, it will tell you why it's sick. 2 Quote Link to comment
mhub91
You should have the choke connected for easy starting. Couldn't agree more. Hit the nail on the head. I don't have a choke on my 620 w/ L20, but I know how to start it without flooding it.... Let it sit for while, it's probably flooded. After sitting for several hours go out and pump the pedal 2-3 times. start cranking it and simultaneously pump the pedal a few more times. once it fires feather the pedal to get it to idle. .... at least thats what i do. lol. ggzilla
i removed the choke plates That makes it more difficult to start. Unless you live where the temp is 170° F, the choke makes for easier starting Quote Link to comment

Re did my valve adjustments to make sure it wasn't loose. It wasn't. How could that happen? The backfire allowed the lash cap to jump out. To prevent this from happening again, solve the starting problem. Quote Link to comment
DatsunHiLife
Thanks everyone. yea gonna go over it all again. hook the choke back up. get the fuel pump psi right and stop trying to over think it. how would the backfire actually allow the lash to pop out? arguing with another mechanic friend over this.. hahaa so far.. this Datsun is not living up to it being a daily driver. banzai510(hainz)
Are you getting spark?????????pull the cent coil wire and place near ground and start the truck is gas being squirted in the carb when you cycle the gas? was anything changed before this happened??????????I mean anything parts?electrical ect....... as for the carb you live in Hawaii. Just pump the gas a few times and once it fires off feather the throttle( I have run w/o the choke before and one just learns how to handle it) PS if you drain the battery then you just hoping it would start .If dont start in a few seconds then trouble shoot right away. maybe dist bolt fell out and timming is way off. tightn carb manifold bolts ect.... but ck for spark. gas and compression it should fire if timmed right 1 Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
That's too low. The stock pump is 3.2 psi 1 Quote Link to comment

ggzilla
The cause of low fuel pressure might be * clogged filter * restriction missing from return line * loose fuel line (sucking air) * bad regulator 1 Quote Link to comment
