Hi,

Is it possible to simply drain the oil out of the steering box?  That is without removing the box out of the vehicle? I would like to replace all of the fluid.

         Thanks,

Can one get a new seal for the steering box?

Mine is leaking.. a bit...more then I'd like. I don't wanna thread jack but how do you know when your low?

*edit, I guess I didn't see this was for a 510 either. I just read 521.. ha!

Soo yeah 521.

Hell it's probably the same box.

521 and 510 boxes are nothing like each other although similar in operation.

Take the fill plug out and look in. If you can add oil then it was down.

Yes you can replace the seal. I have done this a couple of times on various vehicles but not in the vehicle. I suppose it can be done if you have room and the pitman arm off. Above the pitman spline there will likely be some sort of C clip supporting a washer and a seal above that. I guess screws could be driven up into the seal and used to pull it down and out around the sector shaft. Note that the oil will now fall out! A new (greased) seal could be carefully driven back up into place perhaps with a suitable diameter pipe and the washer and C clip replaced. The seal kit usually has new ones in it.

48137-36700 is the Nissan part number and if they no longer have it, can be used to cross reference from another source. Don't forget to grease the new seal so it isn't dry and is less likely to tear on installation. They're cheap so get a couple just in case.
