Motschrocker
I have got a 66 datsun roadster that ijust finished doing brakes on and of course after driving it a bit i see i have gear oil leaking on the inside of my right rear tire. I am assuming a seal needs replaced, but does this mean i have a bad bearing. I dont really notice any play in the wheel. What else could cause a seal to go bad? Simply age? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Yes, seals go bad with age, but also with wear. They rub against the axle. Just replace the seal. I've never had to replace a Datsun wheel bearing. You will need to repack the wheel bearing. I recommend heavy non-disc brake wheel bearing grease so that it blocks the gear oil. Motschrocker
Sounds good. Thanks for the tip! Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
just replace the outer axle seal. I dont mess with the seal on the bearing Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Ocam's razor. You were working on the brakes. It's much more likely that something done has disturbed them, than that the axle started leaking at exactly the same time. Quote Link to comment
Motschrocker
I wondered that. I have not really driven the car much until i just recently got the brakes fixed. Could it just be that old seal finally gave way after driving a car that has sat for years? What generally causes a seal to leak? Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I wouldnt dwell to much on it. Both my seals on my 521 went out . The drum center will get oily. Try to find a Jap seal or a seal with the double lip inner. I have seen the others that dont have it. Its EZ to changed out. I pressure was the back side of drum to get much dirt out so it dont contaiminate stuff later. when putting the axle back in just try to get it in so the axle dont rest on the seal. Its kinda hard But if I can do it so can you. I assume the axle is same as a 521 type with the 4 nuts in back and you pull out the axle Quote Link to comment
Motschrocker
I will do my best with it. I am seeing places sell the seal along with a grease catcher. Should i get that as well or just worry about the seal? Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I think its just the outer seal. Thats all it was to fix mine. The inner one is more a grease seal andd you got the get the bearing pressed off to change that. so just get the outer seal. this will go on the axle. Its fixed my drums from getting oil all over inside Quote Link to comment
Motschrocker
http://www.datsunparts.com/1572 So something like this? Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
No need to replace the catcher. Just the inner seal. You want to prevent gear lube from reaching the wheel bearing. About $8 Like this Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
zilla isnt there a outer seal that goes on there ? Quote Link to comment
Motschrocker
When i search i only find the catcher and the inner seal thats why i wasnt sure. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
GGzill will know more im not a Roadster expert Quote Link to comment
Motschrocker
Ggzill will this fix involve repressing a wheel bearing or is there a work around? This will be my first experience with this. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
No, the bearing is not removed. In any case get a $10 repair manual. The brakes need to be rebled afterwards, its easy for one person to do. Quote Link to comment
