Datsun 620 Project Thailand

Recommended Posts

I purchased this Datsun about a month ago, the body work is a mess but the J15 engine seemed solid until a couple of weeks ago the big ends and main bearings went. Last weekend I completely rebuilt the engine, had the big ends ground to 20thou and re-bored the cylinders + 100thou with pistons to match; replaced the water pump, fuel pump, oil filter, spark plugs, dizzy cap and rotor and gave the Nikki carb a good clean, new fluids etc.. This weekend I should be installing the engine. I opened a topic elsewhere regarding the timing chain but unfortunately got no replies in the matter and due to lack of info on the web I kind of had to just use my knowledge and the limited info I had.

I am struggling to find what year the Datsun truck is as things change in Thailand... Can this be found through codes on the VIN Plates.

I'll try to keep posting pictures as the project goes on, I'm predicting a long project so maybe far between as well!!

Here is a link to the J engine service manual scroll to page em-26 (bottom of page) for the timing chain information. You will need a pdf reader to view these.

Nothing, unless you find a table announcing build dates for batches of serial numbers. Sometimes there were published in Datsun documents.

Why do you need to know the year? Are there major differences by year?

Not at all, im just interested to know a little about the history of the vehicle... its not a big problem - just me :w00t: !!

Well its a big deal in USA where 620 was fitted with different engines, electrical parts, and suspension/brake parts depending on year. Which is also a way to ID the year ...

It shouldn't be a issue here, a Thai mechanic has been at the car already and done it the 'Thai' way!!! I'm sure there will be a lot of things required and to be replaced to original when I get further into the build. Ill solve them then!

By the way... If you're not familiar with the 'Thai way' - it means to fix it anyway regardless. Doesn't matter if you chop everything out as long as the initial problem is fixed fixed!
