FirstDime
Does this look like a 280zx trans and want is it worth provided it is in working condition?? Thanks Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If it has only a reverse lamp switch it's consistent with the '80-'83 non turbo 280zx 5 speed. It's also consistent with the 80-'84 810/Maxima. If you want to know for sure place in first gear and turn the input shaft 10 times. If it's a 280zx, the output spline should turn 3.26 or almost 3 1/3 times. If a Maxima, it will turn 3 times 1 Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
About what? $250? if the seller will guarantee its good. Pick-n-part charges $140 with money back guarantee. 1 Quote Link to comment
FirstDime
Thanks guys, I think I may hold off until I find one closer to me and the seller can confirm its a 280zx. Quote Link to comment
Ranman72
the zx has one ear on the rear of the tranny not 2 like the earlier z trans not sure about the maxima version Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The '80- zx and Maxima 5 speeds are externally the same. Quote Link to comment
FirstDime
He sent me more pics and I was able to confirm its a 81-83 close ratio zx 5 speed :). Picking it up tomorrow for a really good price.. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
It probably is but not confirmed, the Maxima 5 speed looks identical. Quote Link to comment
FirstDime
Understood, he says its a 280zx so I'll take the gamble. He seems knowledgable about datsun.... Will a maxima trans work in a 510 with L20b? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Same as the zx 5 speed but the internal gears are more of a mid ratio. 1 Quote Link to comment
FirstDime
Thanks Mike, I guess if it turns out to be a maxima one its still better for my application then early zx wide ratio.. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
zx wide ratio? The first year zx, the '79, was a mid ratio just like the Maxima. The '80-'83 none turbo were a close ratio. The 5 speed option in the late 280z were also mid ratio. Earlier 280z with 4 speeds were mid ratio but the 240z and 260z were a wide ratio 4 speed. Wide ratio (used in some trucks) 1st... 3.592 2nd.. 2.246 3rd... 1.415 4th... 1.000 5th... 0.882 Mid ratio (used in some trucks and most cars) 1st... 3.321 2nd.. 2.077 3rd... 1.308 4th... 1.000 5th... 0.864 Close ratio (used only in the later 280zx non turbo cars) 1st... 3.064 2nd.. 1.858 3rd... 1.308 4th... 1.000 5th... 0.773 or 0.745 2 Quote Link to comment
FirstDime
so mike i got the transmission and it is missing the throwout bearing sleeve, how to i know what one to get.. would you have a part #??? Quote Link to comment
Doctor510
Any Z collar (sleeve) should work, just do not use a stock 510 unit. they're too short. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
so mike i got the transmission and it is missing the throwout bearing sleeve, how to i know what one to get.. would you have a part #??? The collar had absolutely nothing to do with the transmission you use. The collar is intimately related to the clutch and pressure plate that YOU decide to use. So tell me... what pressure plate are you going to run on this engine? If you have a flywheel on that L20B? measure across the clutch disc surface. There are only 3 possible diameters 200mm (7.8") , 225mm (8.8") and 240mm (9.45"). Measure across the shiny part of the disc and let me know ... Quote Link to comment
FirstDime
Motor and trans are still in the car so I can't measure it yet. I know it has the l20b and dogleg out of a 77' 200sx. Was hoping to get the collar before pulling motor as trans, I guess I should wait. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Use the collar that's in the car now. No worries. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Yes, don't forget the collar is matched to the PP not the transmission. 1 Quote Link to comment
FirstDime
Yes, don't forget the collar is matched to the PP not the transmission. So if I just keep my clutch and flywheel then i should take the clutch collar off the transmission that's in my car now and put it on the 280zx trans with a new throw out bearing? Also I will need to shorten my driveshaft 5 inches correct?? Quote Link to comment
MicroMachinery
You're also going to need to elongate the shifter hole in the floor. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
If you have a sedan, the drive shaft needs to be shortened from the stock 42 9/16" down to 37 3/8" If you have a wagon, the drive shaft needs to be shortened from the stock 48 7/8" down to 43 11/16" Alternatively, if you stand the transmissions up and accurately measure the difference in their lengths it should be 31.5" - 26" = 5.5" plus or minus a few 16ths. 1 Quote Link to comment
FirstDime
ok thanks, old trans is staying in until i have the driveshaft shortened and all parts ready to go so this helps a lot. I will have the drive shaft shop shorten to 37 3/8 " Quote Link to comment
