Thisolddatsun
So I'm doing some searching for a header for my dads z24i pathfinder. His exhaust manifold is cracked. This is the 2nd one he has changed the first one cracked and now its broken down towards the bottom of the manifold. He really wants a header if he is going to put a new manifold/header on it. His problem is the parts store cant find one for his pathfinder. What Im wondering is can a header from a 80s 720 or even a 87 Hardbody with a napz motor? Its 4x4 as well. This is the one i can find but its for a v6 http://www.4x4parts.com/i-18915586-ceramic-coated-ca-legal-header.html Then theres this one which is for a 80-86 nissan pickup with a z24 http://www.4x4parts.com/i-18916780-header.html Quote Link to comment
84720FourWheel
The one from the 87 pickup should fit, Everything is damn near identical until you get to behind the front seats, Misread here is the header I was talking about. http://www.4x4parts.com/i-18980945-triple-nickel-plated-ca-legal-header.html A header will probably end up warping and leaking, and perhaps rust through. I'd get a new OEM manifold, it'll last longer, and breathes more than well enough for a z24. It might sound different (better?) with a header though. So that may be worth it for your dad. datzenmike
While the Z24i in the '86-'91 WD-21 Pathfinder and the D-21 Hardbody is the same engine as the older 720, the body and frames are not. Added to that are the torsion bar and front suspension, steering columns, brake masters and boosters on both, power steering boxes and lines, are all on or near the exhaust side and possibly impacting a header placement. Lets be brutally honest here.... A header isn't going to add anything to a Z24i that barely manages 4K, with any power dropping off after that, that the stock exhaust can't handle. There isn't a well of hidden HP just waiting to be released with a freer flowing exhaust. This engine was designed to make gobs of low speed torque to haul a heavy ass 720 around. The Pathfinder is even worse and why the differentials are geared 4.625. Yes a Hardbody is built on the same platform and may have the same header. W're talking hundreds of dollars for something that does little, is noisy, leaks, has poor fit, radiates more heat from larger surface, and they always rust out. Quote Link to comment

My dad just doesnt want to spend the money for a exhaust manifold thats stock i tried telling him that as well but hes got his mind set on a header. Quote Link to comment
84720FourWheel
He's probably going to have to replace a cheap header several times in the lifespan of a normal cast iron manifold. But the one I linked above should fit if he wants to go the header route. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I understand. The after market industry thrives on the Nascar mentality. Most of this stuff has no use on a stock street engine but the owners 'feel' better. The more you spend of 'after market' parts the more you 'feel' the power increase. If he doesn't already, get him a lower restriction 'muffler'. Nothing straight through and not a flowmaster. Try a turbo style maybe with the straight through glass pack as a resonator. Another symptom of the 'Nascar mentality' is that loudness equals power. This should keep him happy. Quote Link to comment

Alec 720
If you can't be fast, minds well be loud. If you are fast you don't want to be loud. :ninja: Quote Link to comment
