1969 2000 fuel tank?

Hi,

I am new here.  I have a lead on a local, 1969 Datsun 2000.  It has not run for a couple of years.  It had fuel problems, quitting intermittently.  The guy says it had been checked twice by a mechanic, including pulling the tank and checking for fuel pump operation.  Are fuel tanks available as a new replacement part?  What other items would I need to purchase?  If the pump works but fails occasionally, does that mean the lobe on the engine that drives it is bad?  I am very interested in purchasing this car, I just can't figure out why a search for fuel tanks doesn't work for me?

Thanks

Hi and welcome to Ratsun. One of the Fairlady members can answer this better than I. Generally Roadster parts are extremely scarce and owning and keeping one on the road is very expensive. Parts are usually sourced from other non running Roadsters. The rest is fixing or repairing (often modifying) the ones you have. For example the gas tank can be removed and welded or a sealer used, the fuel pump replaced with an electric one.

The old pump could be fine. Get a can of gas and run a hose from the inlet to the mechanical pump into the can. Disconnect the outlet from the pump and direct it into a large enough container. Crank the engine over with the starter. You should get a strong surge of fuel spurt out the hose into the pail. If so the pump is quite adequate for feeding the carb.

Now the old owner said the pump was struggling so this could be a supply problem from the tank caused by an old blocked filter, a fuel line blocked be sediment or sediment in the tank. This should be looked at first as an electric fuel pump will not fix this.

It is more than likely sediment in the tank.  Dump in some diesel and some big ball bearing and shake the snot out of it.  I have also just used a pressure washer and had at it.  Stinky, messy job but it solved the problem pronto.  Parts really aren't all that hard to get except for some of the 2000 engine bits.  Timing components for that engine are expensive but everything else isn't too bad.  www.311s.org will be your new best friend if you get this car.  Good Luck.

I am an owner of a 67 Roadster but also have a side business that caters to Roadsters. providing parts and assistance.  Check out my website at http://sincitydatsuns.com and make sure you check out the section with links to other companies that provide parts for these great little cars.

I have OEM rebuild kits for the Roadster fuel pumps or you could remove the stock one put a block off plate in its place and put an in line electric fuel pump if you like.  Either way don't be swayed from buying the car just because you think parts will be hard to find as they are not.  I even have good used tanks for sale if the one in the car is too far gone.

Whew!  I should be seeing the guy in the next two days to discuss price.  I have located a temporary storage space.  My Bugeye project has to become a roller again before I can make room at home.  So, now I am just to the point of a fair offer situation.  Thanks for the confidence booster on parts availability.
