82turbo720
Hey guys well been driving my turbo z22 for awhile now on 20lbs of boost and the head gasket has finally given up coolant in the exhaust! I was reading somewhere that the 1.9L saturn arp head studs would fit the z24 i got then ones for a l20 and they were to long so i just used my original bolts this is on a z22 block with z22 head was just curious if the z24 bolts and z22 bolts are the same this is an 1982 engine if that matters thanks for the help! datzenmike
The Z20 and the Z22 use the same bolts. The Z24s are slightly different. The Z24 block is 3/44" taller and I think the threads are deeper. Maybe they are longer? Quote Link to comment
scooter
I would put 5 bucks on them being the same. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
was just curious if the z24 bolts and z22 bolts are the same Nope, the head bolts are different. The head stud kit sold by ARP may or may not fit both engines. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The Z20/22 are not the same part number as the Z24. I suspect they are a few mm longer. Just use a second washer under the head Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
The Z24 bolts from Nissan are Chro-Moly-V steel. Quote Link to comment
82turbo720
I went ahead and just bought new bolts for the sake of getting my truck going again id like to over torque them a bit anyone know what the best torque rating would be for this? Id like to go tight as possible! Thanks for all the responses. I got these engines pretty figured out (now) lots of cussing and looking for a bigger hammer so if she blows again it will be easy to throw studs in! Im definitely gonna run lower boost this time around gonna shoot for 14-16 lbs Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Do not overtorque, that makes them weaker. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
O ring or make a copper gasket and you'll never even need ARP. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
True that. The Z22 head bolts are plenty strong, the gasket is the weak point. Still, properly torqued it will hold 10psi. So maybe 15psi will be OK. Quote Link to comment
