Small Factory's Datsun 620 Truck (for trucking)

David: I just got it 5 minutes ago from the mailman. Can't thank you enough... what a nice gesture.

I have to say: I have had an amazing experience with all the Datsun folk in the last 2 weeks. I can't say enough. From David sending me this tool bag just as a gift, to other members offering to sell me missing parts form their personal stash to compete the missing pieces to my 620. Not to mention taking a moment to answer one of my noob-ish questions as well. Thanks to all!

The Datsun Community (Family) is by far the greatest bunch of car enthusiasts I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.

You fit right in, Tim.

Glad the tool bag is to your liking and will go to good use in your truck. Much Better then sitting in a crate in my garage.

Got my truck up on the lift for the first time today. Underneath is fairly nice. I was happy. No surprises. Still really want to disassemble, sandblast and return to new. Possibly next winter...?

I paid to much/picked these up...

To replace the ones I have. I thought that the previous owner had made his own, since all the corners were square and there was some missing holes and such. Now I have an extra set to sell to someone who is in need..!

Then after removal I so discovered they were original, with wood-grained sticker-paper applied. It came off rather easily. It also removed the black paint, so a fresh coat of paint and they should look nice.

Then, I removed the vinyl floor covering. Surprise! (Sad Trombone)

The drivers floor horse-hair padding was soaking-wet, the passengers floor was dry. Luckily, someone had attended to the rust a long time ago, so the drivers floor is minimal. The passengers floor hasn't been touched. It's a bit of a bummer, but the rust does not go thru the metal, so that's good.

That thing is in stellar condition.

In the process of finding a 620. And after reading all the threads, those floor pans are notorious for rust.

I would have never guessed yours were from its exterior condition.

Thanks. Yes, if you can't see light thru the floors, then you've scored...

I was pretty down on it when I found the rust, but I hit the floors with a wire wheel today and they are 100% solid, so I am happy. They are just a bit pitted, but i'll be taking care of this next.

There is currently water finding its way in on the drivers side, and there obviously was a leak previously on the passengers side. The horse-hair floor-insulation holds the water like a sponge, so the combination of the two caused the rust. The underside of the floors is clear of rust.

Good luck looking for your truck. Be patient...

Be worth removing your cowl panel and checking for leaves and dirt they have pretty poor drainage and a bad trap for rust in the steering column support bracing.

Thanks for that: I shined a flashlight down thru the cowl opening and it SEEMS to be clean, since the truck spent it's life i the garage. Although, I do need to remove the cowl, as well as both front fenders to inspect under/behind them. I know debris can end up hidden down there.

The list keeps growing.  :frantics:

I tackled the unsatisfactory flooring.

Used a angle grinder and wire wheel attachment. Luckily just surface rust, no holes/rot.

Then used this 3-part system.

Which led to this...

Went to the local paint supplier, and purchased this paint #307.

There are generally black and 'tintable' spray on bedliners. This is a tintable kit (raptor, made by u-pol) so you just go to your body shop, purchase a tint base in your body color, add it in the bottle, shake it up and spray. All done at once, very easy. The most difficult part is just doing a thorough job masking/prepping.

Amazing. Im glad that you did not just let this truck age with the current problems! Not only that but everything u do is meticulous and pretty. Good job, I Iook up to u!!

Thanks so much for the kind words. This is not a daily driver for me, so I have the freedom to take my sweet time.

Although, I think you are giving me way too much credit. Ha ha.

Awesome looking Datsun 620 pickup!

Thanks! I am lucky to have found it. I hope to not screw it up...

My man. what you did with your interior is badass. I only wish I had the same flooring as you. I think I am gonna have do the same to mine!! thanks for posting all the good pics.

I was disappointed with the find of the floor surface-rust, but it worked out great. This should last forever, and if it was to get wet again, it won't be affected. Durable stuff, and all together, it cost less than $200.

Next up: Radio to radio-delete.

Here's what the truck came with: A cheap unit that the previous owner installed himself. The surround is made from masonite covered in a wood sticker. Ugly. Luckily he ran a dedicated wire directly from the battery, thru the firewall grommet, and fed the radio, external FM transmitter and little digital clock (seen earlier in the thread). None of the original wiring was touched. I would thank him if I could.

Old radio.

Removed.

18334319253_f33b871a65_b.jpg

Empty. I found that there is so much emptiness behind the dash, I didn't even have to remove the bezel to remove the stereo. Slid right out the back. Incredibly easy.

18767285370_26384fdb04_b.jpg

...and fresh delete plate in it's place, for deleting.

18957918981_dec7c90ea8_b.jpg

Unfortunately, the drivers side speaker hole was punched out to accommodate the speaker.

17315079365_8114be2d78_b.jpg

So using my extra set, I made this...

18949618802_94a4575982_b.jpg

And glued it to this. All nice and sanded flat.

18957915661_cd9db3fbb1_b.jpg

Some flat-black paint was applied. Fresh.

18767317818_bfa0b74c1b_b.jpg

And, installed. Like it never happened.

Old shift boot.

Carefully disassemble. Use as template.

Purchased used leather coat at local salvation army for $10.

Disassemble. The sleeves had enough material for the boot.

A few minutes on the sewing machine, and here's the new shift boot.
