icetitan
Hi , Can anyone say what they think a fair quote would be for parts + labor for rear struts replacement. They are making some nasty noises as of lately. I might also need work done on the front end as well , if anyone knows what that should cost.. Any insight would be appreciated. I'm calling 2 mechanics in Los Angeles tomorrow to see what they quote. thanks Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Struts don't make noise ... so maybe you need to figure out what the problem is first? Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
^ That. They do make noise but only when completely blown. You'd be bothered more by your car bouncing violently rather than the noise. Maybe describe your symptom. 1 Quote Link to comment
icetitan
.. ratteling noise started happening at times in driver side rear wheel well. yea they are goners I'd say. Nonetheless , it's time to change them milagewise . Any idea of what a mechanic should charge ? Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Vague question with a vague answer. My shop charges about $90-125 an hour. As a cheap guess, about an hour a strut. Aren't the 280s shocks in the back? If so, about 0.7 a piece. You could buy the tools and parts needed for less than a real shop would cost. But, you may benefit by just paying a shop to diag what is really wrong rather than throwing parts at the car. Quote Link to comment
ggzilla
Shocks can easily last 20 years. When "it is time" is when the no longer stop rebound or jounce of the springs. Or when they are damaged. Causes of rattling include loose bolts or broken parts. Maybe a spring isolator has come loose. Maybe the exhaust pipe hanger is broke or loose. To test the strut shock-absorbing function, push down on each corner of the car, and let up suddenly. The car should bounce only 1 time. If it bounces multiple times, replace the inserts.
