dougm
My wife and I were out with my nearly 15 year old son today looking at car dealerships and we saw a 1976 Datsun 710 4 door car at the back of a dealership. Found out that it belongs to a guy that works there and he is actually planning to put it on the market soon. So here is my question... how much do these cars go for? It's pretty much rust free, manual trans, decent interior except for a couple rips on the front seats, needs exterior paint, engine re-built by the previous owner with 85XXX showing on the odometer. He said he was going to list it for $3k but I don't know if this is a good price for these cars or not. My son really seemed to like it but I don't want to pay more than we should... especially for his "first car". To be honest, I don't even know what these cars sell for after they've been fixed up with new interior and paint. Any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated! 2 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Morning Doug and welcome to Ratsun It may be a '76 with L20B engine, but it has a '74 intake and exhaust on it or a '74 L18 engine put in. (which is fine BTW) I see a '79 electronic distributor too!. Speedo cable replaced with a much longer one... still ok. It does have a 'cherry bomb' type 'muffler' which is going to be very loud. Body seems ok but appears to have been repainted and then covered with that clear coat stuff that doesn't stick. Interior seems nice and the dash un-cracked! The speedo only goes to 99,999 before starting at 00,000 again. Hard to believe that a car with only 85,000 had to have the engine rebuilt/replaced in the past so very likely 185,000 on the dial. $3K isn't too much if ... the brakes work, steering is precise, all lights and signals work, engine runs (doesn't smoke, does not over heat and will restart when hot) drivetrain quiet and clutch and transmission work. Check heater and fan as well a the wipers. Doors open and close properly on good hinges? Check the floor under all four mats for rust perforation and specially under the rear window... open the trunk and feel up under the glass above the fuel tank. Mine was severely rusted here and although it looked good on the outside there was not any support for the glass. 3 Quote Link to comment
MicroMachinery
The car has great patina. If you get it, don't you dare paint it. Find out Where the missing bumpers are, as well. 1 Quote Link to comment
505plus5
Good advices. *Also* as a pointer. Ask him to show you the title and see for yourself how long he's had it for- issue date may be printed there. If not under his name, find out if it was brought into the dealership as a TRADE IN. ;-) You may be able to get it for waaaay less than that! Quote Link to comment

RATX5
Welcome to Ratsun, Doug! That's a damn good looking 710, your son would be a lucky fellow to have that as his first car. The gold 710 badges are rather interesting. Never seen those before. 3k is definitely fair for the car, permitting it doesn't have the aforementioned rust issues that d mike was speaking of. Just curious, but is the dash cracked? It appears to be of rather nice quality from what is visible in the picture. Quote Link to comment

RedBanner
Car is solid. Regarless whats on the odometer, when rock bought it from me it had less than 4 k on the motor and trans, extremely solid car. He bought it and then took the wheels off and didnt get one back on. So he got a verry nice fender from me as well. The only shady thi.g is the exaust, it needs 200$ put into a better routed system. Tell rock to get the bumpers, and both fenders together and you will give him 2300$. And tell him i said hello. Super clean car. Other than the fender wich i havnt seen. 3 Quote Link to comment
