datzenmike
It could be from a zx..... just a first year. ('79) I have one. It was put in my 620 when that one quit, and just recently put in my 710. It's one tough sob. Only the '80-'83 have the two tallest overdrives. Send it back. How's the flue commin'? 1 Quote Link to comment

Flatline
Sorry for my stupidity, but is the only issue here the overdrive size? Im about to buy a 79 ZX trans so id like to know for sure if it'll work with the L16 and my 510 ninja edit: Just read around and got the jist, Sorry for your trouble. Id probably buy this if you weren't on the exact opposite side of the US. 3 Quote Link to comment

Id probably buy this if you weren't on the exact opposite side of the US. An L series transmission will fit any other L series 4 or 6 cylinder, not that you'd want to. So, yes a '79 280zx 5 speed will bolt up and work on an L16. Keep and use the release bearing collar that is now on your L16 4 speed, replace the bearing with a new one. The zx 5 speed will be about 5.5" longer so the mount will need mods and the driveshaft shortened by this amount. If you have a wagon a sedan driveshaft will work on this 5 speed swap. If you have a sedan have it shortened to 37 3/8". Sorry jrock trying to sell this for you. 2 Quote Link to comment

flatcat19
Maybe said member will cut you some of the money back since you were given what you weren't sold. Shitty. I went to Seattle last year to buy a 5 speed. Spent a lot of time and too much money to get it. Split the case when I got home...Chunks everywhere. Pissed. Nothing back from guy. 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
There are two other L series transmissions that would fit the description above... the '80 2wd 720 5 speed and the '80-'84 810/Maxima. The 720 can be easily spotted because it has a neutral and top gear switch as well as the reverse, the Maxima would be almost identical to the zx with only a reverse lamp switch. To be sure place in 5th and turn the input shaft ONE turn. The 280zx output spline will turn 1 1/4 turns. That's once around and to 3:00 o'clock. All other 5 speeds will only turn to about 1:30. 1 Quote Link to comment
Doctor510
I don't know why you have your nickers in a bunch. I have run both in a 510 and I prefer the earlier one. It has more "grunt" in the lower gears AND you have a good 5th gear. IMHO 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
There are three ratios available with the 'widest' being spread between a 3.592 first and the 1 to 1 forth. The 'mid' range has a 3.321 first and the 'close' is the zx box with a 3.062 first. The 'wide' has the most grunt on take off but the largest RPM drop on shifts. First is so low that is is only useful if starting from a stop. It's used primarily on trucks. Overdrive is about 16% The 'mid' is a good all round gear for everything. Overdrive 5th is about 12% The 'close' ratio (used only on the '80 and up non turbo zx) has least take off grunt, so good for use on larger displacement, higher torque engines. More useful on the track or where there are few stops and starts and first is high enough that it can be used for tight corners. All gear shifts have less RPM drop between shifts keeping the engine up closer to the power band. The 25% overdrive is only good for highway cruise. Forth gear is the exact same on all three transmissions. 1 Quote Link to comment

IMHO well cause i want a 280zx tranny and now i have a glorified 620 tranny ... its not his fault we both verified the car was a 83 .... we both were under the impression it was what it was .. neither of us checked i did yesterday .. i have almost everything to swap itin to my auto tragic car .... and while im not doing it tomorrow or the next day i am sooner then lateer.. we have talked .. we are trying to work it out .. i was pretty freaking irritated yesterday .. but like i said its not with out fault of my own ...... hes looking for the correct tranny and has someone that may want this tranny ,,, it just sucks and i know i am responsible as well 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Continue with the swap, why not? Get it running and if you really feel the need, keep looking and find another. The heavy lifting will be done and you can swap it in later, in a morning. I'm willing to bet you find the mid ratio just fine. 2 Quote Link to comment
