72 Datsun 620 driveshaft n Join broke..

Hello Everyone, a quick introduce about me love the site and many people here trying hard to bring their cars and trucks back to the road.. awesome love it. I'm from Florida and I'm having a problem with my truck a 72/620 pick up started to shake vibrate a night before 4-5 blocks before I get home, the next day morning I pull my truck out to put some gas and check to see what's up with the problem..

As I pulled out of my parking lot in reverse no vibration nothing clean smooth, later I switch the gear to 1st and bamm everything started to shake so bad worse than yesterday..  and right after 2 seconds barely I press gas my driveshaft felt off down to the ground I quickly stop to see, WTF!!! .. and yes the U joint splitted in half.. Now I was doing some research.. I know I need to buy a new U joint but that won't be enough because I need to also buy a carrier bearing with the rubber grommet, because when I purchase my 620 truck I guess it was never replaced and I'm glad this incident didn't happen from my Round Trip Miami Florida to Nashville Tennesee driving non stop both ways.. I felt in love with my 620 and I promise I will take care of her very loyal and nice cruise driving people everywhere where like nice truck dude :D hehehe love my 620.

At this moment, there's few things I need to make sure if this are the parts that I need to have my truck back on the road, Do I need to buy a new Carrier Bearing ? or just the rubber grommet is there another pro auto part name called for that rubber piece? Now for installation or DIY Repair.. I can't mark the driveshaft and the other piece that it was together with the driveshaft, now does it matter that is not level equal balance in the same location since the driveshaft is out hanging leaning down, is that important that I need to have it both level parallel together the driveshaft with the back part ?

this is the part I see so far on ebay.. that's what I need ? as far as the rubber piece that needs to be replace ?

but that's for a 1973 it doesn't matter if my truck is a 1972 will still fit ?

and this other part I saw too... don't know if that's rubber piece that I need..

Some early 620s were built late in the '72 521 truck model year but are considered a '73. The build date is stamped on the driver's door tag. The engine tag should say PL620 and not PL521.

No you do not need to replace the bearing, just the rubber isolator. This one looks fine.... http://www.ebay.com/...e500525&vxp=mtr

You can also just wrap a long strip of rubber around the driveshaft and clamp it down, like in the picture below...

I just made one of these temporary fixes yesterday, I used some air conditioning hose and some zip ties.

The U joint is easy enough to replace using a hammer and a screwdriver.... http://community.ratsun.net/topic/2329-u-joint-replacement/ Probably best to take the driveshaft out of the truck to do this... you will have it out to replace the rubber isolator anyway. Unbolt the back half of the U joint from the differential flange.

This is a brake part and has nothing to do with your driveshaft problem.... http://www.ebay.com/...313735e&vxp=mtr

Almost forgot.... welcome to Ratsun.

oh thanks DatzenMike. Thanks for the help.. I was doing some reading about the 1 piece driveshaft conversion.. will it be very convenient if I do this conversion for my 620 truck.. Later down the road I'm going to purchase the 720 4x4 rear leafsprings.. and drop it low like 2-3inch not too aggressive but something like that.. but even so, Would you think that will be more benefitial ? instead of having the stock carrier bearing .. If I'm going for a 1 piece driveshaft, What parts do I need to remove and take to the driveline shop so they can make me a one piece driveshaft. ..  once I get the one piece driveshaft do I need to purchase something else besides the U joint.. sorry for so many questions ..

I wouldn't complicate matters. New U joint and some rubber mat around the isolator and you're back on the road for $20- $30. A custom made one piece is not going to be cheap. I did the isolator on my 620 using a strip of conveyor belt. It was intended to be temporary, but worked so well I left it.

Only reason for a one piece driveshaft it if the old one is totally worm out or totally damaged. Only good reason for a change is if there is some clear advantage for doing so. Every 620 made has a two piece drive shaft and they work just fine.

Here in my pictures I have this broken piece that holds the other 2 arms from the U joint connected with the rear end.. what do you guys call that piece the flange or something ? it's not fully broken but also it's bend too not straight I can try to put the U joint connected in that piece but not safe at all.. I don't know if Discount Auto parts, NAPA or AutoZone might have that broken piece, any of you guys have an extra identical piece used in good condition.. I don't know if a DriveLine Shop might be able to fix that broken piece, repair or rebuild it or something.. any suggestions guys ?

Now here, in this pictures I have the rubber isolator piece that goes around the driveshaft.. and my question, is it only 1 piece rubber isolator that goes to one this side there's the 1 piece but on the other side there's no rubber. Am I missing the rubber piece for the side or it's just one piece and I'm not missing anything.. ?

Do NOT run or fix this piece, get another. They are common enough. Start an ad in our classifieds of search the junk yards. http://community.ratsun.net/classifieds/category/5-drivetrain/?sort_key=date_added&sort_order=desc

Make sure the driveshaft isn't damaged or it will vibrate like hell. Have to say U joints don't go quietly into the night. They ping then screech then vibrate before blowing up. So pay attention or this will get expensive besides dangerous.

That isolator look OK to me....
