Lurking through CL i found this project car; the best part is that someone started the v8 conversion but never finished it; now I can do my own conversion in this car. I have been looking around to fit an SR20DET with the proper transmission. The car came with all parts but missing the gas tank; I have found metal work done mostly on the rear panel where the licence plate goes, I started looking for the whole rear metal section to properly install the licence plate and light.

Please feel free in commenting about this project, if anyone have parts I will be more than happy to get it. For sure I will be looking for many parts, I will try to document everything as good as possible.

Regards,

Remove the license plate, there should be a bracket to hold it in place, #12 LINK: http://www.carpartsmanual.com/datsunB110/Datsun1200Index/BodyCoupe/RearFenderPanel/tabid/2005/Default.aspx

There are two holes for the lenience plate lamps above the bracket, LINK:http://www.carpartsmanual.com/datsunB110/Datsun1200Index/Electrical/LicenseLamp/Coupe/tabid/1932/Default.aspx

The only sheet metal available from NIssan is a HOOD! The rear tail light panel for a coupe is not available, I can think of at least 6 guys looking for one to repair their cars. Your looks in good shape.

I MAY have a license plate bracket, will have to look and see...later.

The wiring harness for the tail lights includes connections for plate lamps.

Thanks guys for the comments and information. I just ordered the SR20DET with a 6 speed tranny; I was looking into a racer, but the idea of making this car a reliable driver is more appealing, adding power steering and AC with heater sound awesome. I have been doing the same project conversion to my toyota ke20 (reliable power).

I just found few 240sx at the PicknPull, this weekend I might go there to remove the firewall and the floor including the tunnels, when I install the metal, the shifter will be in the right location including the seat mounts.

Also I might add my ford 9in rear end to this car, to handle the extra power.

Ill be waiting for your PM Morrisun if you find the license plate bracket.

Thanks Morrisun; I will continue lurking to find parts

I just finished a full inventory of the parts, and I think I have everything to assemble this car. The only thing missing are the gas tank and the heater unit, I've been thinking of getting the one that is on ebay currently.

As well I found a 240sx close to my house that the guy want to part out... "score"... getting the whole front suspension including the crossmember, floor with tunnel section and firewall... well I am going to gut the car to use as much parts as possible; if the guy and I agree on a suitable price. :) Hopefully I can get all parts before next weekend to test fit the engine and tranny.

Very bad news today... the SR20 got dropped in transit, I received the call this afternoon about this issue. Well the seller send me the money back and he will work with the claim... luckily the tranny was in a different crate.

Talking over with a friend, he was proposing for me to install a VG30DETT instead of the SR20DET; big difference in stock HP but I like the elegance and simplicity of the 4 cyl engine. Got in contact with few engine sellers and found another SR20 in good condition, I hope to buy it tomorrow and still been able to test fit next weekend.

Yeahhh... the RB motor was my first choice; I went to see a friend that has one in his Silvia and the length was 30.5in, that puts the engine way inside the cockpit... It disappointing because I had an RB engine close to buy in great condition.

Well, I got good news, The other SR20det shipped, it comes with a tranny but the price was right... here is a pic before shipping... I hope they do not drop this one, because it is not very safely strapped. :)

If everything goes well with this install, probably I will put re-install the engine in my 66 1300 truck... then going for something bigger for the datsun.

Today started working on the 9in rear end... took it apart for cleaning and inspection. As far as gear ratio for the 3rd member I am choosing the 3.50, with the 6 speed tranny and a 26 inch diameter tire. It will roll 75mph at 3k rpm in 6th gear easily, I hope these calculation are right... stole it from another website.

Thanks Matt... your post made me rethink my choice.

I have been playing the with gear ratio.... I can use a lower tire but I have to change the ring and pinion to 3.25 or 3.11 to get the best use of RPM; which it could be an option because I will like to lower this car just a little.

Here is my third grade math skills:

If im missing something please let me know. I still trying to figure out the wheel and tire combo as well which type of brake system to use. As of right now I am just mocking thing up with a set of wheels that I already have.

The Datsun rear end is 47” from end to end not counting the brake drums. I am fitting 15x8 (lip to lip is 9”) wheels with a back space of 3.5 inches and front is about 5.5 inches. I will like to fit a 225/60 (8.86” width) or 235/60 (9.25” width) tire inside the fender; brake drums or disk brake are about 3 inches deep. The ford rear end is about 2 inches center offset to the driver side (shorter) I am leaving a 1.25 or 1.50 inch gap between the back side of the rim and the back wall of the wheel well. The space between the back sides of the brake mount to the back wheel well is 3.00”, the wheel well is 10” deep.

Datsun Rear end              47

Wheel well                         10

Drum deep                         2.75

Drum back space              3.00

Drum to inside well         4.25

Desire back wall space   1.50

Wheel back space            3.50

3.50 - 3.00 = 0.50

3.25 – 0.50 = 2.75

2.75 – 1.50 = 1.25

47 – (1.25 x 2) = 44.50

47 – 44.50 = 2.50

The 9in rear end measure 54.5 inches length…

54.5 – 44.5 = 10 shorter

Axle offset is two inches longer on the passenger side, keeping that in mind the math is easy (I Think)

10 / 2 = 5

5 + 2 = 7                Driver side cut

7 – 10 = 3             Passenger side cut

Hopefully I explained everything correctly.

I just received today the 6 speed transmission, now to clean and paint while waiting on the engine to arrive. I will be ordering a cut to fit drive-shaft from summit get it measured and cut then send it for welding and balancing; also got the gas tank from ebay, and now ordering the whole fuel system with dual pump one high volume low pressure and other one low volume high pressure and a fuel surge tank, relocating the battery to the back and I MIGHT install a roll cage; I dont know about that last part, I still want to seat people on the back seat for fun.

Here is a quick clean, it need more work but Im happy with the end result. I might clear coat the tranny only to preserve the shining aluminum.

Regards

Please don't paint it silver.....but any other color :)

Its aluminum so you can buy a good cleaner to white the aluminum back out.

I like the idea, actually I can paint all the brake lines as well...

I agree that is a good looking A engine, I have been looking for one for a while for my datsun 410; no luck yet.

I painted mine with this, Krylon "Dull Aluminum"...

Just looks like freshly cast aluminum. Not really shiny, just clean...

Here's some of it on my engine: http://datsun510.com/data/3491/20131228_134012.jpg
