B310 won't start.

Hey there, i was thinking about asking this question to ya all now as i discovered that

my B310 suddenly won't start :S stod outside, raised up and covered. Lost my garage.

 

I gonna Discribe from start to end of attempts.

 

Before i parked it in Winter, everything was in perfectly working order, and it did start at christmas.

It hasn't been colder than 15- .

 

I did try to start it, it cranked, and suddenly lost power, after trying and trying it got weaker and weaker 

til it stopped cranking, leaving it with only "clicks" after turning ignition.

 

Battery shows Green light (means there are plenty power) and poles are cleaned.

Jump starting with start cables or power box won't work.

 

Hazard lights flashes, but side markers makes constant light, not flashing.

When turning keys on "ON", headlights should not light up, but they do.

 

Could i have some ground problems or something?

You say the Terminals are clean on the battery and I note it initially turned over.

 

For turning over issue - Have you.

1) checked the terminal at starter

2) checked the cable itself (corrosion inside the cable can cause this) from battery to starter as I have where corrosion will cause wires in the cable to break.

3) used a remote starter switch from battery to solenoid (a click at solenoid means you are getting power across the ignition switch but it may not be sufficient)

4) checked that the ground connection at chassis and block are clean and ground at starter to block is clean

 

Side marker lights are not supposed to flash.

Headlight issue will require jumpering harness sections to run voltage checks or you can run resistance checks to ground with harness disconnected at firewall connections for a short.  With battery positive disconnected.

Cranking the starter long enough to kill the battery may have ruined the starter. Maybe. They are not intended to be cranked for more than 10-15 seconds at a time and then given a short rest to let them cool down. I would put a battery charger on it and recharge first.

 

The headlights coming on with the ignition is not at all normal.

No problems with the fusebox? means....  the fuses look OK? Get a test lamp (under $5) and test for power. Looks cannot be trusted for electricity, you can't see it. Best $5 you will ever spend...

About half the fuses have power all the time (headlights, interior light, brake lights etc.) the other half have to be turned on by the ignition switch. (heater, wipers, engine etc.) In all cases this power comes from the battery but has to go through 'master fuses' called  fusible links which protects the wires between the battery and the fuses. The fusible links, there could be 2 or 3 of them, will be located close to and connected to the battery positive terminal. They may appear burnt or melted and will need replacing just like a fuse.

Well finnaly i got it started now, runned all nice and clean, was something wrong with the vacuumclock and the plugged hose.

BUT after runned well in 3-4 minutes, it suddenly stopped again, now it won't start again.

 

But i still got the light problem, when i turn the key, with lights turned OFF, the park lights lights up anyway, and when it just stopped now

the headlights also lights up without turning them ON, after turning key OFF and ON again, only park again.

 

Something must be wrong here.

BUT the starting problem isn't done yet i discovered....

I started it today, rolled it out and parked it. When i was to start it again, it would not start, i had no spark...

After a while it started again and had spark, later it happend again, no spark and suddenly i had spark again to fire it up.

This have to be a bad Coil or something.

These symptoms are common. It can have more than one cause but one of the most common is the IGN switch going bad.

 

To test for this, next time there is no spark while cranking, place a jumper wire from battery POS to coil POS. If it then starts right up, inspect the IGN switch - it unbolts from the back of the key cylinder.

We have points here! Well i pulled the plug from the key ignition, and now it starts all the time....

I just don't understand... But the biggest problem now is the lights.

 

When turning the key, all lights, lights up without having the switches on... ground problem or? sometimes only park lights, sometimes all of them.

no clue, just mystery.

Headlights have power to the switches at all times and can be turned on or off regardless of the ignition switch. The ignition and the headlights have no connection except near the battery. The ignition has it's own power supply from the battery through it's own fusible link as does the other part of the fuse box that contains headlights, side marker, brake lights, interior lamp, clock, horn, 4 way flashers. All these will work without the ignition on. 

 

Somehow ignition power is getting on the headlights after the headlight switch. In addition it's getting onto the parking lamps also which is very odd as they are separate circuits. I can imagine one shorted wire touching something but not two problems.

 

Does your 310 have a stem on the side of the steering column that is used for the wiper switch? I have an experiment for you to try...

 

With the ignition OFF turn the headlights to ON. Now turn the wipers ON... they shouldn't work with the key OFF but do they????

Bad news.... the problems stopped, and when i drove to the middle of nowhere, the Engine just died.... and whatever

i did it didn't want to fire. lucky i didn't have to sleep in the car in the cold, stod 3 hours til over midnight trying.

 

I begin to think its the distributor now, i got power everywhere but no power goes to the plugs.

Bad rotor? points? any suggestions?

distbutor cap?

 

ck the wires inside the distributor.

 

soon as this happens ck for spark at the center coil wire. place near chassis car and try to start. If not spark then its grounding out inside the distributor.

Of caose make sure you have power going to the coil.

 

I seen this on a old 1966 truck there was some thing in the distributor was grounding out. I would take the dist cqap off I would get spark put cap back on NO spark.
