Temporary rule of thumb so you don't run out of gas in the middle of an intersection or on the freeway. Dates back to the original VW bug which did not have a gas gauge [a "Good Lord" lever which when pulled up gave you about one more liter to find a gas station was the out]. Most vehicles have a gas tank sized so that you will get 200 miles in city driving or 4 hours of driving at open highway speeds [unless you are a speed nut] before you should start looking for a gas station. Hope you find and cure the base problem!

Pull the fuel sending unit, clean and inspect.

Carry a small gas container and stop worrying. It isn't going to run out just under the F. It runs out near E over 200 miles away.

The sender probably just sticks near the top and doesn't read any higher, so what? Drive untill it runs out, dump your saved gallon in and refill right away. You should have 9 or 10 US gallons fit in it. Now you know you have the corretc amount even though the gauge may read low.

What's important here is where it reads when it runs OUT. Full is full no matter what the gauge says.

The '73-'78* 620 holds 12 US gallons.

The long bed holds 17.

The '79 620 holds 13 US gallons.

* I think the '78 also holds the same amount of gas as the '79. Both '78 and '79 were the years when the tank changed and was mounted to the frame and not the bed.
