81SVN20
I'm in the process of changing out the center support bearing in my truck and would like to know if the U-joints on the drive shaft could be changed out as well? If so can anyone direct me to part numbers. Thanks! Quote Link to comment
Rhino13
They can be changed a few different ways. Either way you have to remove little C clips holding the bearing caps to the main part of the u joint. With the driveshaft removed, the clips will be on the inner side of the joint. Look at the part that looks like a +, they are on that inside edge. Pop them off with a screwdriver are hammer. Using a press is the easiest, I've always used a ball joint press. You pretty much press it through one side until the opposite side cap falls off, then repeat the process pressing it the other way until the other cap comes off. It will be loose at this point so disconnect them and repeat the pressing process on the other two caps. (4 caps total to make a +) The other way isn't my number one choice because you can do damage, but it does work if you know what you are doing. Make sure the clips are removed. With the driveshaft removed, secure it into a vice horizontally so that the joint can freely move up and down. On the OUTER side of the joint where the top of the caps are, there is about 2" of flat metal. Hammer on that flat metal and it will slowly bring the cap up high enough to grab with pliers and pull out. Repeat the exact process on all 4 caps. You may seem confused, but it seriously does work. I've done it multiple times for friends that didn't have tools. As for parts numbers, just call all of your local auto parts stores first thing in the morning and see who can get them the quickest for the cheapest. I use precision joints. Good luck Quote Link to comment
81SVN20
Thanks a lot Rhino13, I will tackle this! Got the genuine part number and crossed them at Napa got all 3 u-joints for under $30! Sweet... Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I've only heard of one verified center bearing gone bad. Usually it's the rubber isolator that rots away and the driveshaft becomes unstable. Many have been replaced just to get the rubber part. 1 Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
I have wrapped a strip of rubber conveyor belt around the driveshaft and trimmed it for a snug fit when the U strap is tightened down. It was temporary, but worked so well I left it on at least two years. 1 Quote Link to comment
