Early British Borg Warner transmission service kit.

AutoNationSouthBay Hawthorne CA came through with flying colors! Kudus to service advisor Bob Spencer! The correct transmission filter and pan seal is a [are you ready for this] a 1974 Volvo 144 kit, part number J5010-15927 ! Perfect fit and function since Volvo used the exact same British Borg Warner transmission. In and working like the charm it is.

That would be the Borg/Warner 35 built in Letchworth England plant built in '56 and expanded in '60. They supplied most of Europe's automatics. This model had no cooling lines but used a finned torque converter to 'air cool' themselves. The case and the bellhousings were cast iron usually. Some 510s got the Letchworth made BW-35 but there were at least one other model 35 made in Muncie Indiana that did have cooling lines. After April '71 Nissan had their own 'in house' automatic from JATCO Japan Automatic Transmission Company called the 3N71B.

  My Letchworth built British Borg Warner [RL411 version] definitely does have the external transmission oil cooler in the radiator! Earl's in Lawndale just made me a replacement set of hard line engine block fittings to radiator flex hoses and they work just fine thank you. Oddity, most USA fittings are even numbered, the British Borg Warner installation via Yokohama uses number 5 fittings.

 

The 510s had either a M35 or a T35 and I don't know which was Letchworth and which was Muncie Indiana.

My info shows a cable kick down on the Letchworth and  vacuum  on the Muncie.

 

Absolutely true! BTW, never lubricate or mess with the length of the cable. If the length is altered there's a major and potentially dangerous alignment proceedure that involves tapping into the hydraulics and reving the engine for a VERY short time to measure system pressures. Not for amateurs, professional transmission mechanics with a death wish only.

If anyone insists on swapping out the British Borg Warner transmission and needs to go through the alignment needed, PLEASE info me for the correct realignment and hardwire kickdown proceedure! "You know that you have a problem when the mechanic working on your vehicle is younger than your vehicle!"
