Okay, Figured I would go start an actual build thread. I bought a 1985 720 back in November. It is my second one. I sold my first one(HUGE MISTAKE!)

 

Anyways, it's 2WD 5 speed reg cab. I waited a year until I found one. 

I had a few cars in between my last 720 until this one. 

 

Here's a few of my old 720

 

This was when I bought and installed my ST wheel. 

 

This was a set of rally wheels I had..never had them mounted. Sold the truck before I got around to it. 

 

 

Now on too the cars I had in between, then I'll get to the current one. (Getting my 3" blocks tomorrow!)

I have an ST hub coming in the mail today..paid 50 for it...and I noticed they have a wheel and hub on ebay for 55...Just my luck. Oh well, talked my girl into getting my a wood wheel for my birthday instead of the tattoo I wanted...Is that lame? I don't think so!

I'll post more when I start to lower it. Any pointers on torsion's? like ways to get it done fast?

 

I only plan on going to 3-4"s.

 

Going to try and find some 15x8's and I want it painted white, going to try and get a new hood, new rear roll pan, and valance.

Yes! I was thinking, "Why get a tattoo when I can have something for the truck?" 

 

I have to locate some jack stands, floor jack and bottle jacks before I can add the blocks. My dad's are in use under a toyota currently.

I don't have my own garage or anything. Sucks.

Okay, so I got my blocks in today, two days late because of the weather. Still have a foot of snow and it's been a week since it had snowed. 

I ordered them from summit. They are DJM, 3" Blocks. Might take out a leaf spring as well. 

Have plans to go to my dad's to borrow his shop and stuff this weekend. 

 

I cannot wait to have them on the truck. 

Next I got this like..on Monday. 

My ST HUB. I cannot wait to get the wheel for it. I think I'm going with white painted wood(glows in the dark) with neo-chrome center. 

Or just wood. So many choices.

Don't take leafs out, find some 4X4 leafs, they are a one and a half inch drop by themselves, and are firmer which is what you want when you lower your rig.

If I recall correctly, lowering the rear more than 3-4" will require modifications to the frame, otherwise you will simply be riding on the bump-stops with little or no suspension travel at all.

Yea, if one was using 4X4 leafs, I would say 2 inch drop blocks, my point is to not remove leafs, it creates issues like axle wrap, way less hauling ability, and it bottoms out way easier.

Well yesterday morning I woke up to a flat. So I bought two new tires for the front of the truck. In the process of taking the wheels off I snapped two of the lug studs. It only had 4 on it to begin with. The PO had them cross threaded. So I took about the brake assy, took the hub of the rotor and then popped in some new studs. So I have a few new shiny lug studs and nuts and the rest are chipped black painted ones. So here soon I'm going to just replace them all. 

 

So I didn't get it lowered. I believe it's going to rain tomorrow so I'll just have to wait. Oh well, Better dry than wet and cold. 

 

 

But all in all it was a productive day.

 

Soon going to get a thrush glasspack to replace the flowmaster and diesel tip thats on it.

Looks like you've decided to stay with just blocks, but I figured I'd show you anyway. Now, my shocks are pretty blown out, but doesn't affect this much if at all. Here's my bump stop height with 3" blocks

To be safe you will want to run at least a 16" rim, or hope that you don't get a flat like me until you can afford some! Reasoning for that is because with the 3" block you are dropping everything besides the axle, including the shock mount plate under the axle. So that plate and all of your new u bolts will be just inches off the ground. Check out my build, it makes the truck look really good, just want you to be aware of all the little things I overlooked up front.

Or you could use 510 wagon hardware like I used on my build, but you will have to change to shocks with eyes on both ends.

Well as of now, I'm putting it on hold until I get new shocks and some drop spindles. Because the weather isn't in my favor lately.

 

I would like to do it all at once instead of waiting a to do the shocks when I could just buy a set and put them on while I already have it all apart. 

 

Just need to buy the shocks and spindles when I have the extra moolllaahhh.

You have to use 15 inch rims with drop spindles, did you know that?

Also if you want to buy new shocks, you should find the 510 wagon leaf plates first, that way you have the correct shocks(eye on both ends), if you wait, you will have to buy another set of rear shocks if you use the 510 wagon leaf plates later.

Make your plan first, that way you will not be buying parts that you will only use for a short amount of time, I think the 510 wagon leaf plates are the way to go, nothing on the back axle bottoms out if you get a flat(specifically the shock mounts), but that does depend on how tall the drop blocks are.

Also what size rim and block is that on your pictures? And did you cut some of the length off of your u bolts? Mine are down pretty far...

How low do you want to go up front scurrvy? The torsion bars do a lot more than I expected. I'd get your blocks in back and drop the torsion bars so the bolts have about 1/8 inch above the top nut. There's 2 nuts on each bolt to lock it in place with the weight of the truck on it.

Pep boys has a super cheap jack and stands, so does harbor freight. Obviously lower quality, but you get what you pay for...

You need to keep in mind that I have done a lot to that 520, you actually need to read the thread to see all I have done, front drop arms, tension rod modification, frame notch, cross member mod, roadster rear shackle mount mod, 520 front leaf mount mod, 4X4 leafs, exhaust above all cross members, 2 inch blocks with pinion angle wedge.

I was going to wait and get the drop spindles, but the more I look at my truck the more I just want to throw in the blocks and crank the torsion bars.

So after many weeks of waiting I got my truck to my dads and got it a bit lower. 

Pretty happy with it for now until I get some 15x10's then I'll lower the front a bit more.

We cut out that piece of roll pan that was all funky in the middle there. It had so much bondo on it where it had been broken and P/O tried to fix it.

 

Frame isn't super rusty like I thought it would be..it's dirty as hell though. 

 

I guess this is where a bump stop would of been? (was gone when I got it.)

It's looking good man! Much better sitting low isn't it? I would suggest getting bump stops. Your axle will sit on or be very close to the bump stop, but it will stop your axle from hitting your frame rails, which is never a good thing.

Also give it a good wax! It'll make it look cleaner.

Okay, finally got a stereo half way put in. Need to build a box for the rear speakers, and cut on the dash a little to fit the head unit in more. 

 

I have a 350 small block I want to fit in, I just need to get a transmission for it after that. (Needs rebuild) But it was free sitting in my dads barn waiting for me to use it for years now. 

 

So has anyone done it? I've seen one thread on some other site, I searched ours, but couldn;t find anything. Unless I didn't search the right things. 

 

But For now I just need to rebuild it and get another daily, then start cutting and fabbing.
