BendOr the 4 door Ground up custom build

510BendOr here, today I am going to start my 4 door thread...Sorry if it starts out a bit long winded, but that's what you are here for isn't it? a story about how we got here?

In the Spring of 2014 I had finally reached a financial goal to fund getting back into the Datsun game...

I had been shopping in the $1000 and under category looking for a 510 LOL! and was finding nothing but junk!

So upped my saving considerably knowing I needed money for building after I got the car to get where I wanted...

In my searches I kept scrolling over this shell for $4000 and looked for something that at least ran?

I was a day late on many cars due to having to search out of my region cause there just weren't any out here for sale, it was also tax season so things were getting bought up fast....

Finally I called the guy with the shell... after bugging him for a week or so he finally answered...apparently he got tired of people wasting his time and he said many of them knew nothing about Datsuns to justify the price...so we talked for quite some time and I explained to him it was going to a good home and that's when he said...

"Look I'm going gold mining next week in Alaska and I'm not going to be back until winter so I'll give it to you for $2000"

It was a stripped shell with clean title and a ok body and paint job, many crates of trim and nuts and bolts.

All the doors had been rebuilt and nicely hung, paint looks great from 10 feet upon closer inspection is quite shabby but whatever still straight, cosmetics can be fixed!

it comes with a modified cross-member for the larger exhaust in the rear with a subaru 3.38 CLSD Diff, half built coil over setup with some home made adjustable control arms on a homemade flipped and modified front cross-member, 280z 5speed all glass in place and a set of 15x7 Konig rewinds with Brand new Toyo R4's in a 195/50/15 200sx rear disc 280zx struts and rotors...

At this point I have only seen 3 pictures and talked to the guy for about an hour....I pretty much purchased this car sight unseen, I even proceeded to drop off a deposit on a hand shake, fortunately everything worked out and I picked up the car a week later the day the guy was leaving for Alaska...

As soon as I saw the wheels and the paint I was sold but man did I feel like I was getting in over my head!

Upon further inspection it's not ideal but at this point I had missed out on a few already that would need to be stripped any way just to get back to this point so since I'm not much of a body guy and I would probably never get around to paint at least I had that going for me...

I did not realize the front suspension was not complete and how much really need to be done but I had already committed!

Today after getting back into the Datsun game and seeing what's out there I am very comfortable and happy with my purchase...

Now the fun begins!

So while I have been collecting parts I figured I might as well finish the prep work on the floors and think about slowing down and doing this right!

Good thing I did cause I found a few surprises I would rather just deal with now while I've got it stripped down...

any info on that rack'n'pinion set up?

 Good question there Terolla...

So when I showed up to buy this car the PO was building it for either a 4.3L GM V6 or a VG30...

He had flipped and welded the supports for the rack but beings as it is an S30 rack it is on the wrong side of the cross-member and the wheels turn backwards?

Also the rack mounts are too out of square for me to feel comfortable using an MR2 rack or something else, I'm not a fab guy so I will leave that to the pro's!

SO to answer your question it's garbage for now and will collect dust for awhile!

For some reason I remember seeing this for sale somewhere?  Was it on CL for a lot more than you paid for it?

Yes Draker it was...It must have been up for a good 3 months or so I want to say the first ad was at $6000 and dropped about $1000 each month...

Wow.. I guess if the paint and body work was done right.. you got yourself a deal!

Love those rims on it by the way. Also, your red dime.. very cool. See you at Canby?

Yep...I will Be in Tina my red 2door 510 this year...Hoping to have this car BendOr the 4door ready for next year... and yeah I got a good deal...the body is a bit rusty inside but the outside is straight, I'd give the paint a 7 out of 10 but a good starting point! Between the parts that came with the car and the parts I have stock piled I'm well on my way to having a fairly impressive project by the time I am done...

So the next big goal is to finish the rust repair on BendOr there's not as much as I was expecting in the floors but in the usual spot under the back seat and a couple pin holes under the drivers gas foot.

In order for my buddy to come get it though I need to have it be a full roller and as she sit's the front suspension and steering at least needs mached up...

I had to source a stock cross-member as the one that came with the car was shyte in turn the custom homemade lower control arms went out as well leaving me to source new control arms as well

For now I found some NOS LCA's at a good price and they fit the stock cross member as they should...

All the steering components had been ditched and I have yet to throw down the money to build new so for now I have a rotten old set that will have to do and I am still in search of an option for a steering column as I just don't see a stock one in this cars future...

I do have the struts and cartridges and the special little nut to assemble the front struts then I will have to check the front hubs to make sure all the bearings are there...

I am hoping to put some time in this soon so I can start using some of the parts i have been stock piling...

  • 1 month later...

So I am having a hard time deciding how I want to move forward on my 4 door project?

Before I do anything I want to fix the rust in the floorboards while it's still stripped...

Currently it only has the rear suspension and this is where the contemplation begins???

I want fully adjustable everything but don't have the money right now...

I do have NOS and new LCA's, ball joints, tie rods, centerlink, ect....

So the question is do I put the newish stuff on the 4 door first to get it rolling so I can get it out for rust repair and mach up?

OR

Do I put the newish parts on my 2 door and use the old parts for my 4 door and hope I come up with the adjustable parts before I finish the inside?

One way is quicker and can still reach the same end goal

the other way is slower and leaves shit parts on my custom until I can come up with the adjustable parts?

So torn nothing is getting done now and parts are just sitting?

You plan on replacing it all anyways so why not put the new parts on the two door and work on the interior of the four door? If you're doing the rust repair and everything yourself I don't see the point in doubling effort to get it to where you want and would just make a dolly underneath it that you can wheel it around in instead of requiring all the parts being out in to be taken back out.

That's just me, I'm lazy, I'll find a way to get out of doing it twice or if I have to put the parts in use the nos and just leave them in as end product
