Cardinal Grammeter
Would like to use accurate factory colors for the following: Hood trim (dark gray like grille?) Fuel filter bracket on inner fender Windshield washer bracket on core support Windshield washer nozzles (cadmium plated?) Ignition timing scale at crank pulley Engine compartment light (this is steel and can rust, how was this finished from factory? cadmium plated?) Are the following semi-gloss black: Hood Prop Rod Tire lift mechanism Lift Rod and Crank (or Red?) Jack Frame I'm assuming any body metal on the underside is body color. Wheels (all dark gray? semi-gloss?) I'm not going to get crazy about exact matches but would like to be in the ball park. Who knows might consider getting Eastwood Cadmium Plating paint but it is a multi-layer process so probably won't do it. Oh, PPG aerosol color blender works on Rustoleum and Krylon! If anyone can add to this list, please do so! Thanks! (I may add to this list if I think of items I've forgotten. 1 Quote Link to comment
datsunaholic
Hood trim (dark gray like grille?) Yes Fuel filter bracket on inner fender Body color Windshield washer bracket on core support Unpainted (or cad plated) Windshield washer nozzles (cadmium plated?) Unpainted (or cad plated) Ignition timing scale at crank pulley Unpainted Engine compartment light (this is steel and can rust, how was this finished from factory? cadmium plated?) Unpainted, or a light cad plating Are the following semi-gloss black: Hood Prop Rod No, unpainted Tire lift mechanism You mean the part under the truck? Unpainted Lift Rod and Crank (or Red?) Red Jack Red Frame Black I'm assuming any body metal on the underside is body color. Yes, though the underside of the bed was commonly just primer, sometimes it got body color. Or dealer undercoating.. Wheels (all dark gray? semi-gloss?) More like medium-light grey. Darker than haze gray. Anything "unpainted" would probably have been plated, but it wore off easily. Most undercarriage stuff was black- suspension, torsion bars (with part numbers painted on), driveline, leaf springs, axle tubes, brake drums and backing plates, etc. 2 Quote Link to comment
Cardinal Grammeter
I'm thinking the typical plating used is the silver-ish zinc and not the golden cadmium plating? Guessing silver-ish cadmium zinc plating. Found impressive page comparing all the spray silver paints for resto and DAP 873 12oz Alum Spray Paint (UPC 0070798522596) was the closest to mimic this plating. Need to find where to buy. Eastwood stuff is crazy expensive. Here is like to the article comparing 16 silvers. Since this is very useful general information maybe I'll create a thread in a general forum for everyone to see. We all have to deal with rusted plated parts. UPDATE: Can't find this DAP 873. The comparison article was referenced in a 2010 article so it was performed before then. It is possible it is NLA. Still looking... I think I've found it - or at least a cross-reference: It appears AP "bought out DAP paint" and their AP Products 003-55273 Dap Touch N Tone Spray Paint Aluminum 10 oz is the same as the original 873. I compared a list of DAP UPC's and it appears the last 2 digits coincide with both the original DAP #'s and the new AP #'s. Cardinal Grammeter
Did Datsun use the Silver or Gold Cadmium plating? Trying to choose a paint to simulate the proper plating. Don't want to blow big $$$ on Eastwood stuff. ________________________ EDIT: Rats - its the Gold Might be able to blend it all with Silver, Gold, and Candy Apple Red and Green. The Datsun Gold Cadmium appears to be very light and not as deep as the Eastwood stuff is. So maybe Silver base, mist coat of Gold, and then Red and Green highlights from different directions. Wonder if they make Candy Apple Gold Quote Link to comment
