British Parts Substitution for Column Shift 4-Speed Transmissions

My 320 pickup friend in KS sent me this substitution sheet that he's made up for occasionally needed parts for the 4-speed column shift transmissions built into the 320 truks. Might also be applicable for the 410 sedans if they were 4-speed column shifters. He regularly visits Victoria British in Kansas City researching parts that can be robbed from the Britt parts shelf and used on the 320 (he has five 320's). His brother is into the Limey cars so he has some inroads as to comparing parts. He posts on NICO occasionally and has helped me a lot on part subs between the Brit and Datsun stuff. With his permission, I'm posting a scan of the sheet . As to vendor sources, Victoria British and Moss Motors are both easily found on internet search.

I have a classified ad currently running for one of the rectangular rubber vents in the top left of the photo with the clutch fork in case anyone knows where I can acquire a new or used one for another 320 friend doing a restore.

Well no one on here has ever posted a list like that before that I know of.

Do you know if there is a part number for the pins that hold the shifter arms on the transmission?

I just went to Moss Motors and tried everything I could think of to search for them pins myself, but not one searched produced a column shift transmission, they were all floor shift, could you ask Truckie what he did about the pins I mentioned?

I once joined that forum way back when I had windows 98 or XP, I got so many cookies from that site on my computer that it locked up, I never went back, I talked to AZ about it on another forum, but I just never went back.

Back then there really wasn't much about 320s on that site, but it looks like things have changed.

Wayno,

I've sent a message to Truckie about the pins. If he can impart any wisdom on a source, I'll pass it along to you and post it here.

If I remember correctly, Mike or you upgraded your NL to dual circuit brake system. If so, is there a proportioning valve in the system? My plan is to go back with a 620 dual master and I need to determine if a p-valve is needed.

Mike put a proportioning valve in the NL320, I haven't put one in the U320 yet, even though I put a 1979 Datsun 620 dual master in it, I have not gotten it going fast enough to decide if it needs one, every time I went around a corner the truck would flood out because the needle/seat would get stuck slightly open, if I could keep it running long enough, I would open the hood and tap in the needle/seat area and all would get better again, that carb is off right now being rebuilt.

Thankyou for inquiring about them pins, if we could find a source for them, that would be good.

320 guys,

I received a mail from 'Lil Truckie', author of the column-shift parts interchange sheet with an edit to the sheet. He missed the part number on the tailshaft housing gasket, so if you've archived this, replace your archive copy. Also Wayno, he gave me this Ebay listing for what he has been using for replacement pins. He says that he files them down a little which I'm assuming that he turns or tapers the diameter while spinning the pin in a drill chuck. I'll ask him. I don't believe that he has a lathe. He did say that the Ebay vendor is in Isreal and the pins look to cost $6+ each. He says that he has bought from this vendor three times and transit takes some time but he's had good transactions every time. I will pull a pin out of my column trany and do some measuring and netting to see if I can find something available in-country. Here is a link to the Ebay listing for the pins:

Zed1, I'm sure that you know that the column shift stuff won't work on your 520. Nothing on the sheet but the rubber vent insert is common between the column and the top-load 4-speed tranys except maybe the tailshaft housing gasket and the rubber vent insert. I do have Truckie looking for one of the vents for you and I've also listed several times in the classifieds on Ratsun looking for a vent insert for you. I've collected everything to graft the floor shift trany into my 320 just like the factory did except the 8" diameter clutch flywheel and I'm hot on leads on three of them, as I type. I'm beatin' the war drums on this flywheel.

Here's the new improved Sub-Sheet for the tranys

My mistake. In checking out the Ebay link to be sure that it worked after I posted, I see that the listing is for four pins for $7 and & 7.5 shipping. I'll check it out for sourcing in the US.

Hey Steve, those pins seem to be the right size for the transmission arms and for the fulcrum lock pin, that size is not for the kingpin, at least not in any Datsun I know of at this time, as the kingpin lock pin is a lot bigger.

In the photo below, the 3 pins on the left are for the 320 transmission arms to lock them in position, and for the fulcrum pin to lock it into position, the fourth one over to the right is undetermined at this time, and the far right one is the kingpin lock pin for the 320 threw the 620 as far as I know.

I did pull the lock pin out of my 1962 U320 kingpin assembly and compared it to my lock pins in my new box of replacement kingpins on the shelf for a 521, they are the same.

In the photo below there are 2 sets of lock pins, the set on the left is the lock pin for the fulcrum pin out of my 1962 U320, the set on the right is a lock pin out of a early 620 fulcrum pin on a front drum brake 620(kingpin frontend 620) truck, they seem to be the same except the 320 lock pin has SAE threads, while the 620 lock pin has metric threads.
