michikazu
Hello, this is the first time i 'm writing here... I have a Datsun 160J, L16(s) engine. I changed the nikki carb to a weber 32/36 dgev withou any problems (red line kit). The next i will try, is to swap my distributor, y have a Hitachi D411 and i bought a D4F6 (Cardone 31-620). I knew i have to change the rotor and distributor cap also. The problem is that i have the L16 pedestal and timing plate, the timing plate doesn´t fit, i also realize that this distributor insn´t a matchbox so i need a control module, i was planing to use a msd street fire, is that correct? I also have to change the pedestal and timing plate? or can i use the actual pedestal and modifying the timing plate to fit on my D4F6? Thanks a lot if you can give me a little help. Here are some liks to the pics of what i'm talking about (i could't upload the pic): https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzV5CEXJ_RpNWFZDVldlaHRMb2hoUFg4XzFjcDRfTW5iaUFz/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzV5CEXJ_RpNLURQbHRNb1BrSWZ4TWp6YzhLTTA3VlM3eTFB/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzV5CEXJ_RpNVlYzLWZDdXQyNnpfOC10RjVPSHl1M3BBcUZj/view?usp=sharing Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Maybe use this plate as a template to make one with larger slots for adjustment. There are several different ones... have a Hitachi D411 and i bought a D4F6 (Cardone 31-620). I knew i have to change the rotor and distributor cap also. I think what you are saying is you are replacing your L16 distributor with a '78 (from a 620 truck?) First to confirm what you have look on the outer case or body of the distributor. It should have 22100- ????? stamped on the side. Can you post the part number for me??? Under the cap it (should) look like this.... If it does, it's known as a remote igniter and there is a separate ignition box needed to make it work. Rather than an expensive MSD 'street fire' set up simply use a $10 General Motors HEI module. Here is the simple wiring for this using the remote igniter distributor.... Simple, very effective and very cheap. You must get and use the '78 or newer high output coil made to work with this to take advantage of the much higher output voltage. Do not use your stock coil as it will over heat and burn out. Here's some information on the remote and matchbox distributor. Wire it according to the upper diagram. 1 Quote Link to comment
DanielC
I have put a matchbox distributor on a L-16, using the stock L-16 pedestal, and timing plate. Here is a picture of two L-16 timing plates, one modified to fit the larger diameter matchbox distributor. This picture shows the two timing plates on top of each other. The stock one is on top. To modify the plate to fit the distributor, I used a 1/32 cutoff disk to cut the tab for the bolt that goes up into the bottom of the distributor body. Then I took a short piece of 1/16 welding rod, and put it in the gap between the cut off tab, and the rest of the plate. Then I welded over the top of the rod, and gap. Finally, I ground ugly welds down flat. Because this plate, and the stock L-16 was not for the matchbox distributor I put on the L-16 engine, I had to drop the oil pump, and reindex the distributor drive spindle away from the stock location. 2 Quote Link to comment
michikazu
Yes i'm planning to change my L16 distributor. The new one have 22100 N5907 stamped at the sides. So now i will try the HEI module and modifying the plate! You really help me a lot! Thanks! Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
22100-N5907 is the remote igniter distributor used in the '78 S10 (200sx) and the A10 (HL510) Other that very minor differences it the same as any other '77 distributor used in the 620 Yes i'm planning to change my L16 distributor. The new one have 22100 N5907 stamped at the sides. So now i will try the HEI module and modifying the plate! You really help me a lot! Thanks! Don't forget to use a '78 or newer coil. As for the HEI unit what ever is the cheapest available. Even one from a junkyard is fine. Quote Link to comment
michikazu
Great, then when i gonna buy the Hei module i will buy a MSD Blaster 2 coil too! and I 'll modify the plate to! Thanks again for all the advice Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Don't spend money needlessly. You want a coil with a primary resistance of 0.8-1.0 ohms. The Master Blaster coil won't work any better than the proper stock coil. Any '78 and up L20B coil will do. Quote Link to comment
michikazu
Ok! I'll seek some coil with that resistance so!!! Quote Link to comment
