Duke
It's been contemplated before. I believe Bob (the guy who built the 520 on a Miata chassis) started the swap, but didn't finish it. I like the idea, but many of the normally aspirated Miata's that I race against seem a bit gutless. With a blower though, I bet it would make a 510 scoot pretty well. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Honda spins backwards. Nissan's 3 cylinder will NEVER see a showroom. If you have the Miata motor, do it. How long is the tranny? Is your 510 a DD? Cuz it will be down a long time if you go forward. Quote Link to comment
DISLEXICDIME
you will have to build a bigger tranny tunnel . the power to hassle ratio just isn't worth it if you ask me Quote Link to comment

datzenmike
130-ish HP in a similar weight 510? You could build a 2.3 for less and have more low speed torque fun. 1 Quote Link to comment
INDY510
They also don't really have a transmission mount. It has a PPF brace, bolted to one side of the transmission, which bolts to one side of the differential Quote Link to comment
Dime Dave
The biggest plus for the Miata engine swap is the gear ratios in the transmission. If you have never driven one, that stubby little short throw stick with the ratios right on top of each other will suck you right in. Look at the rpm drops when shifted at 7000 rpm. 1st - (3.14) to 2nd (1.89) - 2787rpm (7000 to 4213) 2nd to 3rd (1.33) - 2074rpm (7000 to 4926) 3rd to 4th (1.00) - 1737 rpm (7000 to 5263) 4th to 5th (0.81) - 1330 rpm (7000 to 5670) Here is a link to a calculator that will work these numbers up for any transmission/final drive/tire-wheel size. http://www.gearboxman.co.uk/download/gearspeeds.v2.o95.xls Quote Link to comment

Stoffregen Motorsports
I've always liked that engine. They look just like a Lotus or Alfa Romeo twin cam. Nice vintage appeal. Quote Link to comment

tr8er
^ nice example! Raised tranny tunnel, custom crossmember, some heady electrical work, but doable. As long as this is not a DD Quote Link to comment
