Toyota Racing Development.... TRD.

No wonder they rejected the original name... Toyota Universal Racing Development.

Years ago...I was on my way to work. I worked at Beaverton Nissan at the time. Driving my Nissan Maxima at the time; hot car.

I was cruising along, 55-60. Whatever. I got passed by a stock Passat. Vanity plates on this VW said TRD RPR.

I thought about that plate all day long. I just couldn't get it out of my mind.

For years now, TURD RIPPER has always stuck in my mind. Lol.

No. My dad had a '51. I have owned...

'55 (6 cylinder) owned and sold and later bought it back

'57 283 4 speed

'65 chev

'65 Pontiac

But these were when gm made real cars.

But my 620 has a slip shaft from a chevy van in it.

Almost before my time B P O all had their own engines and racing history. GM saw this as unnecessary internal competition and began to standardize the running gear. My friend's dad had a '62 Poncho with... yup... a Chev 283 in it. When Olds tried this (in the 70s?) there was push back from loyal owners and a class action lawsuit claiming new owners expected the 'legendary' engineered Oldsmobile engine and not the lesser chev POS. The upshot was that GM could do as they pleased with engine selection.
