Anyone hack their 720 dash for a modern radio?

Looking at taking out the factory radio in my 86 720.

Need some advice on best way to cut up the dash.

My suggestion is - don't.  Use the console.  Not only is the dash opening really too small, it's also not deep enough.  Most modern head units have heat sinks on the back, and that would be rammed up against the vent ducting.

I had a pioneer deck installed in my 720, didn't have any issues, but it's not a fancy deck, just a regular radio/CD.

I don't have room in my console, as I still have two more gauges to install yet.

JCWhitney used to offer a "universal replacement". I have an old post with part numbers but since I don't give a #$%^, I am too lazy to repost. Your task, not mine. Search is your friend! It was a center display unit. Separate On/Off and Tuning modules that fit any dash opening. A separate main electronics unit that could be mounted behind the dash, in the glove box. under the seat, in the trunk or anywhere else in the vehicle that you could run a cable to. It supposedly fit all the dash cutouts from the early units to the DIN openings. Good luck!

I managed to fit a jvc in there, though I forget what I did , the area under the ac control cluster I put in a equalizer, and ran connections to my amps under the seats.

WHY would anyone want TWO radios, especially one that is completely useless?

 

(EDIT:Somehow it double quoted, was going to delete it, but nah, it kind of fits, just as damn pointless as having TWO DAMNED radios! )
