Andres131313
I have looked around and I really want to switch the stock diff out of my 78 datsun 510 (a10). I have seen some other sites talking about it but it was for the first gen of the 510 and I wasn't sure if they would match an a10. I'm planing to keep the l20b and turbocharge it. I may also switch the transmission out for a 5 speed. What LSD will handle the power and torque and will fit my a10 the best? Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
A10 is solid axle where as the PL510 is independant rear. Any axle with an LSD will be custom from something else. Not from a Datsun. Quote Link to comment
Andres131313
Mine says HLA10. It's not a solid rear. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
It is a solid rear. They come in either 4 linked rear or leaf springs for the wagons. Quote Link to comment
Fat510
Yes, it is solid axle. Model H165B Ratio: 3.545 All A10s came with this Prefixes: H means it came with an L20B L means Left hand drive Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
The A10 had a solid H-165-B rear axle containing the gears. The H in the H-165 refers to the solid axle tubes and removable third member. The 165 is the diameter of the ring or crown gear in mm (about 6.5") and is a fairly good indicator of it's strength. The B (I'm not sure) has something to do with the carrier material used in the third member. The H-165 will handle 225 ft lbs of torque or about the maximum a stock L20B with 4 speed will put out. A10s with L20B manual and automatic were 3.545 ratio. All Z20S engines were 3.364 All sedan A10s were 4 link and coil suspension. Wagons were twin leaf spring. The earlier PL510 came with an R-160 (6.3") independent rear suspension (IRS) and also come with a solid axle H-190 (7.5") The H-190 can handle about 285 ft lbs of torque. By handling the torque I don't mean 7K clutch dumps and 30 feet of one wheel tire hopping. If you want an instant kick in the ass performance up-grade get the H-165 third member from an S10 (the early 200sx) and swap it. The S-10 used a 3.889 ratio for a 9.7% increase in RPMs. Fast and easy and no mods whatever to the engine. You want stronger get the rear axle from an '82-'83 S110 (second gen 200sx) they were H-190 and similar width. A bonus is the rear disc brakes and it's already four link and coil suspension. With the H-190 you have choices of gears from 3.545, 3.70, 3.889, 4.10, 4.375, 4.625 and 4.875. LSD??? you don't need it. Quote Link to comment
Andres131313
Ok I got confused when you said solid rear axel. I thought you ment something else. Anyways I want an LSD because it would be nice to put all the power to the ground instead of having one tier spin and the other sit there with almost no power Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Time for reality check... it's an L20B. The day the tires break loose, then start looking for an LSD. For now spend time and money on the suspension, brakes and engine. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
At the expense of turbo'ing an L20B, to gain very little in power and loss of reliability, a KA would be a feasible option. With the ability to turbo the KA later, easily. Slightly off topic, but meh. Quote Link to comment
Andres131313
Well I do have a 605 just laying on the ground... Ehhh too lazy. The engine is done. Oversized Pistons, compression is through the roof. Brakes are like new. Yet only one wheel will break free. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
^ Huh? 1 Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
What's a 605? engine is done? like toast or like heavily modified? brakes are like new? even new they are only barely adequate for a stock A10 Only one wheel will break free? like the other three are seized? or you need an LSD? flatcat19
I think he confused all off us. Or.... ------------------------------------------------------------------ Everyone above this line... Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
buy a phamtomgrip lunchbox locker. so you got this l20 finally running good? Quote Link to comment
Andres131313
Jesus Christ. A 605 is a massive hemi engine. When stock it can make about 1000 hp. Engine is running like a champ with help from you all and my book. The engine as of right now does not have a turbo but is finished. The brakes I have can stop the car and that's ok with me for now. When I try to race people the one wheel will spen and the other rear one will sit. This is why I'm asking for an LSD. I'm sick of not getting off the line first because of it. I'll post a video of it driving soon. All races are legal. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Why use a Datsun to race? Reread your own signature. Or, throw that 605 in it. Fuck it. Quote Link to comment
Andres131313
Because it has to have a little fun. No. The 605 will kill me. I'm crazy not stupid. Plus that's going in my 68 charger. Datsuns are fun to drive. My 510 likes going around runs sideways. My charger is too easy to get sideways. And my car has a bitchy personally. To me a car with a bitchy personality is better then a car that is reliable. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Find a '74 710 automatic. It'll have the L18 engine. It has a 4.11 H-165B in it. You won't need to rev the shit out of the L20B and side step the clutch when racing. Just drive off smartly and those gears will pull your head into the back seat. Four elevens are a 16% increase in RPMs in all gears. Quote Link to comment
