CrazyHawaiian760
I'm not sure witch one to buy? Parts Geek sells both the electronic and the match box types. One way is plug and play and the other you have to get new coil. I have searched a lot and it Sounds like the matchbox type is better? Truck is running like crap ..sputter put ...points suck! Nuclear Water Boy
How do you know if the problem is even ignition? Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Truck is running like crap ..sputter put ...points suck! try getting new points and make sure to use a point coil and use the ballast resisitor. if anything is out of spec it will cause arching of the points. a conder bad ot not grounded will cause issuses or a worn dizzy bushing. meaning the dist shaft bounces side to side cause point to open/close prematurely Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Both EI distributors need a specially matched coil to take advantage of the higher output voltage. If you don't change the coil you will have to keep and run the ballast resister with your old coil and basically all you get is a breakerless (pointless) ignition system. For $5 you can put new points in and problem solved. If the problem is a bad cap and rotor or bad wires OR if it's a badly adjusted carb an EI distributor isn't going to help now is it??? CrazyHawaiian760
well after messing with it for several hours.Changing one thing at a time.....It was the condensers ! That's why I wanted to switch to EI . Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
well lets us know what your looking for and find a Matchbox with the whole distributor mount(pedastal) and get the coil when you have time later I assume you have a dual point dizzy now yes places sell the distributor but nothing else like thew mount and timming plate. They assume you have the correct one already. PS they were 2 types of matchboxes and they use the common L20 mount then one uncommon so best to line up and find the correct stuff first Quote Link to comment
LenRobertson
Dizzy FAQ if you haven't seen it: http://web.archive.org/web/20050308082501/home.att.net/~jason510/Dizzy_FAQ.htm If you get a used matchbox dizzy check for side play in the shaft at the top bushing, There should be very little play side to side, I've seen some worn enough the star thingy on the shaft hits the fixed thingy on the top plate (yeah, I can't think of the proper names). I don't know what that does to the spark but maybe it isn't good. Len Quote Link to comment
CrazyHawaiian760
Has any one ever purchased a distributor from Parts Geek? They sell the matchbox dizzy. Looks to be the same one every one is talking about. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Look through the wrecking yards. These all had the desirable Matchbox style EI dizzy. '79 620 truck '79 A10 (HL510) '79 S10 (200sx) '80 2wd or 4 wd 720 truck Earlier '78s all used the Remote Igniter style EI and in California it was also used from about '76 or so for better emissions control on most cars and the 620 truck. If you find a Remote Igniter try to find the remote box, it's usually under the dash somewhere, but if not an HEI module from a GM distributor can be substituted. You should be able to find a Nissan EI dizzy and coil (don't forget the coil) for $50- $100, maybe less. They fit, they work and they are Nissan made. Quote Link to comment
srsjerry187
If I may know how much is the matchbox? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
Depends on the wrecking yard, $50- $100 maybe. You might get lucky and find someone with an old car and offer them a case of beer for it. Be sure to get the matching coil with it. Quote Link to comment
