I would like to make my 86 720 more fun to drive. As of now all I have is a muffler and an air cleaner setup on it. Every time I read about doing stuff to these I get stuck in these damn California smog laws. I would love to drop a ka in it, with the matching 240sx 5 speed and am lsd in the back. But would this even pass smog? What can I actually do and still smog? Right now I already have to put my stock air cleaner on. Is it even worth trying to do anything to this truck?

You could register it in Arizona, they don't require smog. But you'd have to have an Arizona address so if you know someone or have family out there you could use there address.

 

You could register it in LV Nevada but only under Classic Vehicle or Classic Rod plates. The only problem with that is you can only drive it 5k miles a year and if you go over then you have to smog it to re register it.

No worries, I was concerned when I moved home from Battle Mountain NV and had to run my 86 720 King Cab through emissions.  Sailed through with my Weber 32/36.  They were most concerned with the EGR being hooked up and having vacuum and the gas cap sealing.  They did run it on the dyno test and the emissions were half of the limits.

I know it may sound weird, but I love Nevada. Not the Reno LV part of Nevada, I love the Pioche, Goldfield, Calente, Caselton part. Southeast Nevada is a very cool place. Hard to believe they are that concerned with emissions in Nevada. If I didn’t live in a more beautiful place already, I’d move to Pioche, rent one of those vacant buildings, and work on my 720s all day.

That is the worst advice you could give to anyone, the constant rain and clouds that hold in the pollution( and the left coast liberal fucks) will soon make it a requirement for everyone to get a smog check. Under no circumstances should you even consider it.

Swap in that KA you want, keep smog equipment if you're concerned. Talk to someone associated with the Bureau of Automotive Repair for details before you do it, though. Do it by the book, and you should be good. Have a more powerful and efficient engine. That's more fun, right..?

Find an older truck that doesn't need smog check B)

Still requires the smog equipment to be on it in order to pass a visual. Unlikely to happen but piss off a cop and it may. Any engine swap has to be the same year or newer. Engines from years requiring a smog check will need smog checks. Again unlikely you will be asked on an obviously older vehicle but if obviously modified (like most old vehicles) it will draw attention from the police. Keep a low profile and stay under the radar.

Already it will fail emissions. You need the stock air cleaner for the warmed air, the hot idle sensor (inside) and the valve cover breather must be connected to it.

Any swap will be tested and must meet the new engine's emissions ratings including ALL sensors and smog equipment.

I spoke with the head ref for the BAR in Sacramento, and he was extremely helpful information wise. They really don't hate on people trying to modify cars, and its not impossible to do a smog legal swap, you just need all of the smog equipment from the new engine, including egr, vapor can, and and other various components. On the particular engine I'm going to be using (top secret for now) I have to retain the factory ecu and original 4 speed boro-matic trans, because the computer needs a signal to adjust the f/a ratio. SOO, once it's refereed, and it has it's BAR sticker, its on to smog. THIS is the great bit, because not only is the engine more efficient and pollutes less, the emissions standards are SIGNIFICANTLY lower because I'm putting a car engine in a truck, aaaand said truck is half a ton lighter than said car. Then it gets a 5 or 6 speed....


TL;DR: Smog legal swaps are difficult, but not impossible.  B)  :hyper:

Hey, y'all.

 

So, to do an engine swap in Cali, you need to have all CARB-compliant emissions components _in their stock locations_.  You also need to do all the wiring to have all of the emissions components and lights (like the CEL and OBD-II port for relevant setups) working properly.

If you are serious about this, your first step should be to formulate a plan, and your very next step should be to call up the BAR, tell them what you're planning to do, and then seeing what they think.  If they say it won't fly, fix your plan.  If they say that might work, then do some research on other people who have tried the same swap

 

 

Here's a guy who swapped a VG30 into his 720 and got it Referee-approved.  I'm considering getting another truck and doing that swap at some point in the future, so I've been researching this a bit:
