it is 5/16" different, but you can make it work. put your 4 sod shifter in and work it between 1-2 and 3-4 a number of times. it will leave marks on the lever showing where to grind some relief marks where the shit rod cut out hits the shifter.

Just a note: I did the same thing and had trouble with 5th gear. It would tend to grind and at times not go all the way in and eventually kick out. I ended up cutting the bottom side of the Z tranny shifter and welded the top side on the 4spd so i could reach the shifter. The length of the bottom ends(from the pin, down) of the Z and 620 4spd are diffent lenths.

Hmmm... the hole in the striking rod that the plastic cup on the bottom of the shifter is deeper than it needs to be. The different lengths just mean the cup is deeper or shallower in this hole. I honestly have never seen the 280z shifter but I have a first year 280zx 5 speed and my 620 shifter fit perfectly. I've examined the 620 4 speed and didn't notice anything.

By part number I see there is something different between the 4 and 5 speed striking rod guides... this is the part the pin secures the shifter to.

When we were switching out trannys between multiple 4 speed and 5speeds (all longtail NON zx )  we looked at the shifters and they all looked the same other than the lengths and the bends ,, after  the mounting holes.. But they all seemed to match up length wise from mounting hole down .

But we have no real way of knowing if they were original to the trannys . Except for the short one because we assumed it was a 280z shifter as it was quite a bit shorter than the rest.

From '80 on there definitely were different striking rod guides.

This is my '79 280zx (I guess I do have one) 5 speed guide...

This is my '85 diesel 5 speed guide I swapped in to get the shorter shift throw....

You won't get the shorter throw without changing the shifter length below the pin. The '80 and on non turbo 280zx shifter is like the one above. I've just never seen the tall 'ears' on earlier 4 or 5 speeds, only from '8-0 on... and not all of them..

To be clear the top picture is a 5 speed from before '80, and as far as I know the 4 speed is the same. I haven't noticed any differences between them or other early 5 speeds.

The bottom picture is a 5 speed but made after '80. Some are like the picture and some are like the earlier ones. If you have a 4 speed with the taller pin hole in it post a picture of it.
