dopeitsdavid
So the opportunity to pick up an N/A Sr20de has come up and I'm really thinking about buying it. I'm running a d21 KA24e in my 510 right now and was wondering if it would be a significant upgrade from it. Another thing I was wondering was that since i'm already running a KA motor, will there be much fabrication i'd have to do? any parts i can still use? The sr will pretty much be just the motor, i'd still have to get the tranny and wiring/ecu unless i can reuse parts from the ka. Overall i need to know how the swap would go since I'm going from a ka and not a l-series like most of which i searched. thanks Quote Link to comment

I'd say it's a downgrade, actually. A good bit less torque, and depending on which SR20DE, same/less horsepower. 2 Quote Link to comment
Son_of_a_Datsun_Guy
No real point in doing an SR over a KA unless you're going to A. Build the motor or B. Turbo charge it. 3 Quote Link to comment
MicroMachinery
Your red line will move up significantly. N/A SR's don't feel like they really come alive until 5k. I'd stay with the KA. 2 Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
You already have a runnig car with parts availability here. The SR does not. Stay KA. 1 Quote Link to comment
dopeitsdavid
thanks for the input guys, really appreciate it. I didn't think the single cam ka would be favored over an sr but you guys have some valid points. The sr supposedly came out of an S15 but you can never be to sure. so pretty much, KA24E > SR20DE. looks like I'm sticking with the ka. Quote Link to comment

Should have a hump in the front of the valve cover and a hump on top, like this. so pretty much, KA24E > SR20DE. looks like I'm sticking with the ka. Well, it's a lot less work at least. ^_^ 1 Quote Link to comment

This sr is pretty much completely taken apart so I was originally planning to do a rebuild on it and replace the KA. Unfortunately there's no valve cover included so I can't tell if it's a true S15 motor or not. Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
I'd be willing to bet a FWD SR is trying to get pawned off on to you. 1 Quote Link to comment

Sort of reminds me of King Arthur's description of Sir Lancelot! How did that one work out? Ask Guenevir! Quote Link to comment
flatcat19
Does it have a distributor or individual coil packs? Missing parts. Torn apart. Unknown condition. Stick with what you got. Any smoking deal on that is still nothing more than a money pit. Quote Link to comment
datsunfreak
Even if it's free, that is still nothing more than a money pit. Fixed. ^_^ Those engines are relatively inexpensive when they are complete and running. You could easily spend that much putting this one back together... 1 Quote Link to comment
tr8er
Your friend might have been fooled, and is unknowingly pawning it off on you. I'd pick a running engine over a box of shiny parts any day. Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Reminds me of an old saying: "never let your neighbor touch your carburetor." If your friend is not a gret mechanic, then the friend part doesn't matter so much. This also sounds like a 20 Valve 4AG swap I did recently in a '65 Sunbeam Alpine. The motor was a deal, but it was missing pieces. We've spent about $2000 on the missing pieces so far. Could have bought one from that guy in L.A. for a lot less. Quote Link to comment

Should have put a Ford 260 or 289 V8 in and had an ersatz Sunbeam Tiger without having to go through the agony of Chrystler dealer shops! Granted, you might have had to "massage" the tunnel to fit the transmission but that's the easy part! Quote Link to comment
Stoffregen Motorsports
Yeah, thought about that, for a second. This combo weighs about half a ton less than a Tiger and has almost the same horsepower. The bonus is listening to the 5 valve per cylinder head breathing through individual throttle bodies at 8500 RPM's. Quote Link to comment
