phatdave
I am finally at the point of finishing up my truk and it's time to build my exhaust. I have a shorty header and want input on a good muffler. My pal at work has a 300 with a RACTIVE muffler that sounds pretty good, Throaty but quiet.l I have been shopping the 'Bay for mufflers and I see all sorts of aftermarket muffs. SO guys help me out here. What should I buy to get good performance and a good exhaust note from my truck. There are some fairly cheap small mufflers, about 19-20 inches but I'm thinking they would be really fucking LOUD! Thanks ahead of time for all of your help. Quote Link to comment
kiznook
spintech. I have one on my ka, and it sounds great...it's loud, but throaty and low...doesn't sound like a fart can Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
I run a Super Turbo Dynomax http://www.dynomax.com/products/stp.asp Its VERY Queit unless you really have to Romp on it. Of coarse the Bigger the intake the better thexhaust sounds. Jeff like his stock muffler on his 620 with the KA. But Thrush has a 3 chamber Turbo and JC Whitney has a Turbo(23$)(case) that is a 2 core and has the samller(case) version also But havent RUN it. I have 3 at Home waiting next week to never to get used. I was hoping Jeff would take it so I could here it then give a opinion on it http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2010386/c-10101/Nty-1/p-2010386/Ntx-mode+matchallpartial/N-10101/tf-Browse/s-10101/Ntk-AllTextSearchGroup?Ntt=cherry+bomb+mufflers This is all my opinion. The Key word was Queit and more FLOW.. Just up size it to 2in pipe and that will be enough All other mufflers with those funcky vanes are just diffent incarnations of nothing and make the car should LOUD.(All sound good on a V8)But what will it sound like on a 4 banger with just a Weber DGV(A Bumble Bee in a Can???) The Bikers always say on their helmets. Loud Pipes Saves Lives!!! I believe it. My own LOUD is good so I hear you comming home before i bail out of your Window!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Quote Link to comment
phatdave
What do you have on the 510 in your dvd? Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
I got mine out of a muffler shop dumpster, brand new! It's 2 1/4" so I had to buy an adapter for the in and a turned down elbow for the out. Have you seen how small the Z24 truck mufflers are? must be 1 1/2"-1 3/4 " outlet and they work just fine for 2,400cc, so for most stock, or near so, just get a larger quiet one. You've probably already noticed that noise doesn't = hp and reducing back pressure too much will affect bottom end. If I had a high performance engine that actually would gain a few hp from lower restriction muffler, I would get a quieter one and install a cut out in front of it. http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog/?action=categories&pcid=101 Buying a loud big muffler is like marrying a loud big woman, 'cept if you can't stand the constant noise, you can replace the muffler easier. Oh yeah, no noticeable gains (hey it's an L20B!) but at least I know I'm not loosing any either. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
My truck, Daily driver Dynomax Super turbo Weber DGV w L18 1.75in My red Banzai car, Dynomax Stainless Ultra flow muffler L16 Cam w/mikuni sidedrafts. Muffer is 2inch but from the Y pipe up to the muffler is 1.75inch Yellow car , cherry bomb in center with a Monza dual tip at the end(previous owner) set up. Very LOUD!!! But a tuff LoUD since Mikini44 mm carbs and Cam. If I do it again on my 510s it will be a Super Turbo or a 2/3 core Turbo type muffler ( Daily driver!!!) I think the Mikuni(carbs) intake is Louder!!!!!!!!!!!! Buy a Stainless muffler if you NEVER want to buy another muffler again The Flowmasters rot out at the vains Quote Link to comment
Pacific coast Datsun
Im running a Flowmaster 40 series mounted right in front of the axle w/ a turn down 1.75 pipe from the manifold back. Deep throaty @ idle & sounds good on the freeway. L 18 w a 32/36. Quote Link to comment

I have 3 at home. Was going to give one to Jeff to try out but he will be running his stock 620 muffler with his KA. He wants really quiet!!!!!!!!!!! Quote Link to comment
Umai Kakudo
Magnaflow all the way! Their mufflers are top quality and straight through with no restrictions. Find the part number for the size and style muffler you want at Magnaflow's site and then search for the part number on Summit since they have the best prices but it can be hard to find the right one on Summit Quote Link to comment
phatdave
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=001&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT&viewitem=&item=110130507969&rd=1,1 I got this one. Quote Link to comment
RB_Shaggs
i know for a fact (had one on a previous car) the ractives can be very loud.. of course it also depends on your cat., pipe size, ect. but make sure you run a resinator if you don't want it too loud Quote Link to comment
phatdave
No Cat it's a 73 620. I got the muffler today ITS HUGE. 26" long and probably at least 6" Diameter. Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
datsunfish on NWDE has a 620 and has a Thrush and he says that is Loud and thats a 2 chamber.he added a cherry bomb also to get rid of that buzzyness(i call it the Bumble Bee in a Can sound) Yours might be Loud and annoying after awhile. They all sound COOL at first. Some dont Go as fast as they are loud. Your truck looks pretty clean. I myself would have stuck with Turbo muffler in the stock location.but this is me. phatdave
I did hear one on my Buddys Nissan 300 and it was pretty quiet. Throaty but not LOUD! I would think it might be a little louder without a Cat but not that much!? Quote Link to comment
Guest DatsuNoob
I'm getting ready to throw some exhaust on my truck too. I got a stock full exhaust from a 91 Eagle talon tsi, and you wouldnt believe it, but it looks as if it were actually made for my 620. The bends are as close to perfect as possible without being perfect. I'm gonna add my 18" flex pipe at the header flange then weld on the 2 1/4" all the way back to the rear driver's side tire. I figured since this system was used on a turbo charged car, it would help my old L20 breathe a little better. Stock turbo muffler sounds pretty good too. Quote Link to comment
datzenmike
DatsuNoob you may find it louder than you thought. The turbo actually homoginizes the sound by breaking up the exhaust impulses as they pass through the turbine wheel. phatdave what's quiet on a six cylinder may sound raspy on a four. That's why V8s sound so nice and fours sound ratty at the same RPMs. Now I know I just pissed some one off, so let me just say "it's just an opinion". An eight, at the same RPM, has more pulses spaced closer together, so the sound from the muffler is 'smoother' even if loud. It's hard to get a four to sound nice through the entire RPM range. What's a throaty rumble at idle, often becomes 'stones rattling in a can' as it revs. Quote Link to comment
Pacific coast Datsun
I welded on a small glasspack on my 521. I like the rumble @ idle & as i accelerate it's a nice deep tone. Quote Link to comment
Guest DatsuNoob
I put on a Flowtech Terminator. It's loud azz! Probably a bit too loud, sets off car alarms and shit. The deep rumble is a bit much when you're trying to listen to tunes, but then again I'm also running a header. I think I'll switch up to a quiet type in the near future, price was right, I got it at Schuck's, dude made me a killer deal, $19.99 regularly $59.99 Quote Link to comment

banzai510(hainz)
Somehow people dont beleive WHAT I said!!!!!!!!! Get a Turbo type muffler!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 2 or a 3 chamber if you want quieter!!!!! Quote Link to comment
datsun dreamer
I went with a 18' glasspack and 1 3/4 pipe i have a L18 so it sounds real good(to me!!!) I went with that old school sound and it goes with the truck nicely! Quote Link to comment
banzai510(hainz)
Im not a big fan of a CherryBomb.Glasspack system unless it has 44 Mikunis Upfront. Then it has that Tough LOUD sound that people respect Otherwise they are too loud. When you really look at them were is the sound going to get absorbed anyways. There isnt that much volume to them. As for the other mufflers,I think its redesigns of the same system(Flowmaster as a example) I think I would rather have a cheap Thrush Turbo muffer or the Summit equvilnt http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=WLK%2D17711&N=700+115&autoview=sku I like the small size of these ones below http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/ItemBrowse/c-10101/s-10101/p-100000280352/mediaCode-ZX/appId-100000280352/Pr-p_CATENTRY_ID:100000280352 Quote Link to comment
Bleach
The summit one looks good. I like how they call it "Turbo-Style" ... hmmm... where's the forced induction on that muffler??? :( Quote Link to comment

Bamadawg
I bought a set-up from Aero mufflers for my '83 Supra P-type. I don't have it all together yet - but it gets nice reviews from everyone from V8 dual Corvettes down to Honda's. They carry a 2" resonator (can use in place of your cat like I am if non-emission state) and a 2540i for imports. Contact Allen @ http://aeroperformanceexhaust.com/ and I bet he can give ya a good pkg price - he did me! A20 Resonator: http://www.aeroexhaust.com/performance_resonator_ar20.html 2450i Muffler: http://www.aeroexhaust.com/import_exhaust_2540i.html Cheers... Nate Quote Link to comment
